Inglewood High School Band/Family

My dad gets up at 5:30am for the 47years he's been at Inglewood. Gets ready for work, drives to Inglewood high school. Teaches from 8:00am -2:45pm, Band Practice from 3:00pm - 5:30. Sit in that LA traffic to make it back to Carson. Mr. Hutchinson dedicates his time and effort into every single student like his own children. Making sure each student in band (200 students) and in each class is (215) is set up to play, learn and express their music abilities Everyday.
My whole life I watched Mr. Hutchinson always working on trying to make stuff happen for the band. Working at an inner-city school with very little funds, he fought for years trying to get band uniforms made, but unfortunately there was not enough funds. When my dad was battling Cancer back in 2004, he was still at work 5 days out the week. Having band practice, and going to performances. Still Spreading his gift of music and giving kids purpose. Although he was told to relax he went back to work a couple weeks after beating cancer. He would go to Chemo every morning before he clocked into work.
Out of the 47 years he's been there 1 of his battles was no longer necessary for the uniforms. In 2001 the superintendent at time, got uniforms made for the band. Finally they were able to retire their green T-Shirts. I've seen him take instruments to the shop and leave them there until he can afford to pay his own Money to get them out, while still providing for 4 kids (2step kids) and his wife. For the past 8 years the school has unfortunately, not been able to host Solo and ensemble (SAE) events. The SAE is a yearly classical music competition hosted by colleges and Grade schools for all students/schools willing to attend in the whole South Bay Area of California. Inglewood High became the first Inner-City minority school to host a classical music event. Each student picks out a classical solo. The day of the competition students play their solos for Judges (professional musicians) who then grades them from fair- Superior & this will determine whether or not the students are allowed to move on to the next level. Not only is the band playing the Top 10 BillBoard songs, but they are also required to play classical music and dress up in white dresses ( ladies) suits and bow ties (men). These are just a few of the battles the band has fought.
If you've been in band you understand how important it was to each student. The band has kept kids out of trouble. It has given them a gift/purpose. Some students have Gone on in life to become music executives, music producers, rappers and singers or just professional musicians. The Inglewood high school Band has sent over 5,000 students to college on a Music scholarship with a high-Graduation rate. The band has done commercials for TV shows, movies, Apple Products like Beats by Dre with Pharrell Williams, parades, openings for sport events, plays for college Sport games. They've also have competed in Solo and Ensemble Orchestra events where the whole band plays classical music as a whole and so much more. My next goal is to sign a petition to allow The Inglewood High School band to perform in the Rose Bowl parade. They've never had an inner city school perform and that would be Mr. Hutchinson's DREAM.
100% of this money will be donated to the Inglewood High School Band. The money will be used to get new Instruments, clean the band uniforms (18 years of sweat from hundreds of students), Host Classical Music festivals which is what minority Kids need to experience, Order new sheet music, Get letterman jackets for the seniors (I still haven't received mine from 2007, band couldn't afford it *rolling eyes*) get new instruments and anything else the band might need. Please donate so that Mr. Hutchinson can continue to help Rep "IngleWATTS" (lol) the best way he can. He's been teaching since his early 20's and he now 76 years old. The father figure to many, always fussing, always talking about his degree, & loving guy. Mr. Hutchinson.
