In Memory of Chris, for Ellie
Donation protected
On January 3, 2019 Chris McCrum and Ellie Mulder were out in the backcountry near Pebble Creek with a group of close friends exploring the mountains. Chris and Ellie shared a strong passion for the outdoors, and their New Year’s ski trip was a yearly tradition. Mid-afternoon on the last day of their trip, Chris was caught and killed in an avalanche. While the group was able to locate him and dig him out, he had succumbed to his injuries and could not be revived.
The loss of this incredible man has broken the hearts of family, friends, and the community at large. Chris was an exceptional person whose kindness, generosity, boundless energy and enthusiasm, and thirst for adventure inspired all those around him. He made huge contributions to the community of Squamish and enriched the lives of those who knew him.
He is survived by his equally exceptional partner, Ellie Mulder. Anyone who knows Ellie will attest to her strength, her compassion, her adventurous and curious nature, and her ability to provide endless unconditional love and support. Anyone who knew her and Chris together will attest to the strength of their partnership, the beauty of their love for each other, their ability to bring out the best in each other, and their incomprehensible ability to accomplish unique and creative projects all the while simultaneously serving you a warm cup of coffee and a slice of freshly baked bread with homemade jelly. They were an unstoppable force of kindness and an inspiration both individually and together.
In her typical fashion, Ellie has somehow managed to carry all of us while also dealing with her own grief and the complexities of organizing and managing Chris’s affairs. Ellie was due to return to school this week, but is taking an undetermined amount of time away to focus on the many necessary tasks at hand at home in Squamish, and on her own healing during this unimaginably difficult time.
Ellie has another year and a half remaining in her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at BCIT. She wants very much to complete it, for herself and for Chris. Ellie will be an amazing nurse. Her intelligence, ability to problem solve, and enormous capacity for caring and empathy will enrich the lives of her patients and their families.
As Ellie obtaining her Registered Nursing designation was a shared goal that was going to allow them to carry out many of their future dreams as a couple, Chris was supporting Ellie through nursing school. Ellie planned to support Chris once she started working as an RN so that he could carry out one of his dreams: building a home for the two of them on a piece of property somewhere in BC.
The program is full-time year round and very rigorous, leaving no time for Ellie to work. The funds raised from this campaign will be used to help Ellie with financial obligations related to nursing school/tuition and costs of living, and will ensure that she is cared for during this transition. At a time when many of us feel devastated and unsure of how to help, removing some of the financial stress from Ellie’s life seems like a small step in the right direction. Donation amounts above and beyond those required for Ellie to support herself as needed will be transferred to a cause of Ellie's choosing, in honour of Chris.
A seperate Go Fund Me has been started to raise funds to cover the cost of both the funeral and celebration of life so that Chris's mother Ulrike and Ellie don't have any additional financial burden added to this already trying time. Please visit the link below:
