Just $20 from every dog owner in the area would be more than enough to get the job done. If there are any hiccups, delays, or issues with NYC parks that would prohibit this project, 100% of donations will be refunded to donors. I will make every effort to ensure transparency throughout this process.

As many Greenpoint and Williamsburg dog owners and residents are now aware, there was a horrifying Leptospirosis (lepto) outbreak in the McCarren Park dog run. While it's easy to attribute this tragedy to owner neglect, there is a more significant issue at play.

McCarren Park Dog Run is unsanitary. Rats run rampant in NYC, and Leptospirosis stems from rat urine. Essentially, the muddy puddles that form in the dog run are prime breeding grounds for disease-causing bacteria. City runoff and the rat population contribute to this problem. McCarren Park Dog Run is not up to par with the rest of the well-maintained, modern dog runs throughout NYC; installing turf (artificial grass) is the best option and ideal solution. Even easy-to-sanitize cement would be more suitable for dog runs than raw dirt. It is a cost-effective solution and remains even cheaper than planting grass in the long term. Natural grass, unfortunately, would not last long as dogs quickly trample grass; natural grass is sensitive and requires maintenance, patience, and care.

Looking to the dog park in Domino Park (below), turf ensures proper drainage of liquids (diagram below), so even in rainy conditions, our dog's paws stay mud-free and clean. These deaths were preventable. McCarren Park tennis courts are beautiful; why shouldn't the dog run be maintained and treated the same? As I am sure you may have noticed, the material on the soccer field, mere steps away from the dog run, is perfect for dogs to fetch and run around while encouraging drainage.

We hope to accomplish this goal by May 2022!
