Insurance company Canceled Policy then Tornado Hit
We humbly ask for assistance with rebuilding our roof, porch & ceilings so that we can live in our home again. My late father-in-law built this home & my husband has lived here for most of his life. A tornado recently struck right in the center & uproote a 100+ year old tree landing it right on top of our house.
. Needless to say, our lives changed within an instant as we have been devastated. We are very embarrassed to admit that we didn’t have homeowners insurance. To our defense, please allow me to explain. The same company covered the house for nearly 30 years with never a late payment made & never a single claim. I made the mistake of calling to inquire about a possible leak from where I saw a water stain on the ceiling. However, I did NOT file a claim. Within the week of my call, we were sent a notice demanding that we have to a Roofing Company come evaluate & write a statement that our roof was sound & didn’t need replacing. We complied & at that time found out that a vent was simply turned the wrong way, which caused water to enter through to the ceiling. There wasn’t any damage at all. Shortly after we sent in the required documentation, we received another notice requiring that we make several upgrades/improvements to our home & property that we simply could not afford. I had to have major surgery at the time & was out of work & the lack of a second income put a huge strain on our finances. We tried to explain, to no avail. We were then sent notification that our policy had been canceled. Due to them canceling, we couldn’t afford the high premiums that other companies required. After that we lived in constant fear of a disaster that would cause us to lose our home. Sadly, we had just started to get ahead of bills again & just started shopping for coverage....just not soon enough. Our worst fears became a harsh reality. We’ve gotten estimates of twice the amount that we are hoping to raise but we’re only concerned with the structure of our house. As much as I hate to face it, cosmetics will simply have to take the back seat. We just want to be able to live in our home again. Even though we face a hard road ahead, we thank God every day for having each other without injury or death during the storm. Thanks to my husband who got us into our “safe room” (hall bathroom) within minutes of being hit. There were no warnings at all. We also consider ourselves even more blessed for the safety of our youngest son. He had moved back home just two weeks prior, with his two dogs. While he was away that afternoon, his living area was damaged the most as the tree fell directly on it. So even though we have a lot to be saddened by, we have a ton more to be thankful for We ask first & foremost for prayers. This has been extremely difficult & stressful. I find myself crying at least once a day now versus most of the day. And we face an uphill climb that wears on us & will continue to do so until we know for certain that we can rebuild our very loved home. Thanks to all for taking the time to read our story & for even the smallest donation amount that you may have to offer. I’ll keep everyone updated as prayers are answered.
