The front lines in the fight against COVID-19 are in the Emergency Rooms in hospitals across the country and around the world. Healthcare professionals are currently going to battle with little to no personal protective equipment (PPE). They are at much higher risk for contracting Covid-19. We want to help change that.
After seeing some inefficient early online schematic plans to build shields to protect health care workers in the ER from viral exposure when intubating patients, Matt Wallen, a board certified emergency medicine physician, came to the conclusion that he needed to create his own IntuBox. He wanted to protect his staff and himself. So he enlisted a small team, consisting of a designer (M. Frank Emanuel), an artisan group leader (Jon Lancto) and another artisan group leader (Evan Kruger). The team got together electronically to brainstorm on designing, producing prototypes, iterating and finalizing our own IntuBox that is ergonomically correct and can contain all the necessary equipment for intubation.
Our objective of starting this GoFundMe page is to pay for the materials and the labor to make these IntuBoxes.
We are NOT seeking to profit from this endeavor.
Our goal is to make the IntuBox available to any one (ERs, Covid Wards, ICUs, etc) who needs them in order to protect our health care workers on the front lines of this pandemic.
This article and accompanying video from The New England Journal of Medicine is a good reference to understanding the dangers to health care workers during the intubation process:
