Both actual incidents of violence against EMS providers and a perceived increase in the day-to-day threat of violence has prompted EMTs and Paramedics to begin wearing bullet-resistant vests. Spreading opioid use also contributes to the danger that EMS providers face on the job.
At “active shooter” incidents, EMS providers are no longer standing in the street waiting for patients to be carried to them. To save more lives, they are accompanying teams of law enforcement officers into buildings so they can triage victims and stop bleeding.
We would like to purchase bullet-resistant vests for our EMS providers. However, the annual budget of Northwest EMS cannot immediately pay $500 per vest for all of our providers. The vests are sized for girth and length, so sharing is not practical.
A few EMTs and Paramedics have purchased their own vests, but not all can afford to do that, and Northwest EMS would like to reimburse those who have.
We need your help to protect those who serve us. Our goal is $30,000. We hope you will do your part to make sure that every EMS responder goes home to his or her family at the end of their shift.
