Invisible Giants short film fundraiser

We are inviting our community to help us fund the completion of our short film, Invisible Giants, which serves as an educational resource and visual companion to the book Lifting As They Climbed: Mapping a History of Trailblazing Black Women in Chicago.

Film Description: Embark on a captivating journey with the short film, Invisible Giants, as it delves into the creation of the groundbreaking guidebook, "Lifting As They Climbed," and unveils the remarkable stories of women who have profoundly impacted their communities. Witness the inspiring narrative of various artists, cultural workers, and educators who have utilized this pioneering book to spearhead impactful projects both nationally and locally. Meet Brenetta Howell Barrett, a living legend at 92 years young, as she continues her tireless organizing efforts on the vibrant streets of Chicago's west side.

Invisible Giants powerfully underscores the significance of preserving and uplifting the often-overlooked histories of Black women. Discover how this transformative book, initially self-published in 2018 has blossomed into a comprehensive resource. Now encompassing additional women and landmarks, the guidebook boasts five immersive tours spanning from the far south side to the bustling downtown streets to west side neighborhoods, encapsulating the rich tapestry of Chicago's diverse communities.

The short film is a creative project developed by the authors Essence McDowell and Mariame Kaba in collaboration with filmmaker Tom Callahan of Sensitive Visuals. It is in documentary film format, created to educate, inform and inspire.
