Iraq Refugee Crisis

Tax deductible

November 25, 2014

Five thousand heaters are needed for families in Xanke refugee camp, and 70,000 children have no school.

Three months ago, we launched a fundraising campaign to help families in Iraq who lost their homes to ISIS. Over $113,000 in online donations were received! The need continues and with the onslaught of cold weather, the situation is becoming more critical.

Camp Xanke, the largest Yazidi refugee camp in Iraq, is home to 90,000 people living in tents just outside the city of Duhok. Government bread supply has stopped the past two days, making mothers anxious for their children. The government has provided each family with bricks and concrete to build a floor for their tents to keep them from being washed away by rain.

From our national partner:

“I was hosted by a family of eight, - parents, five daughters and a son. They insisted I should stay for tea. We talked mostly about their needs and how much they have missed their homes. As the eldest girl was watching the teapot, the rest tried to swat flies, smile and nod their heads at my words. The girls miss going to school. Their son goes out every morning to the laborer stand hoping to make $12.20 as daily wages to support his family. The youngest daughter, timid and shy, introduced me to her stuffed animal turtle wanting to play. The mother insisted that we should stay for lunch. I was humbled to see such a poor family so generous and hospitable.”

Most families in the camp have no heat and over 5,000 heaters are needed. There is no school for over 70,000 children and no room in the public schools for these refugee children, - public schools that have re-opened since the ISIS invasion are running double and triple shifts just to accommodate their regular student load. Also, more medical help is needed; the existing camp clinic is overrun with over a thousand patients each day.

Please consider partnering with us to supply:

- A kerosene heater for each of 200 families. (200 heaters at $50/heater = $10,000)

- A basic-needs care package for 500 families. (500 boxes at $20/box  = $10,000)

- Funds to help Iraqi Christians establish a relief team, school and medical clinic for the camp. ($18,000)

Thank you so much for your prayers and support!
