Iris was our rainbow baby
She was the child we had so longed for
After 2 miscarriage's,  it felt like a miracle when we found out we were finally pregnant with a healthy baby.
We found out about Iris' heart at the 20 week anatomy scan, we decided to continue the pregnancy's in hopes that surgery would heal her heart.

Iris Jane Barahona was born on September  9th 2020, from the moment she entered this world she let everyone know that she was a fighter. Her cry didn't even sound like a newborns cry it almost sounded like a battle cry because that's what she was a warrior.

After her birth was transported over to Dell children's medical center and on September 15 she went for her first surgery which was an aortic vein replacement. She recovered so quickly and gained the love of all her nurses even faster. Iris was released from the hospital after 51 days and was able to come home for a week and enjoy Halloween with us before she need to return.

On November 9th she went under again for her Konno procedure and on November 10th she went under again do to a bad donor valve and again Iris recovered rather quickly. she had some trouble at first with her lungs but she persisted and overcame the mountains she was facing with a smile. Then again she was released due to her being in perfect health for a heart baby.

On January 8th after being home for one day, we decided to bring her back to the hospital because something about her just didn't feel right and on January 9th at 12:20 AM Iris coded  and was given compressions for over an hour and was put on life support after 4 days she was removed from life support due to her being stable enough to come off of it. However the decision was made to place her on the heart transplant list which was our main goal but life being life decided that was not the path that Iris would walk.. Her body is  failing  her, her lungs are weak at some points collapsing.. her kidneys are very much asleep to the point where medical professionals don't really know if they will ever truly wake up. her liver is enlarged and her brain has a bleed and she is now having seizures..

On January 20th, Iris started to experience more and more heart failure, the medications to help her just wasn't enough anymore. So on January 21st her father and I decided that her fight  was over and it was time to let her body rest so we asked to hold her one last time and around 8am, Iris passed away in my arms but surrounded by family members that hugged and kissed and read to her one final time.

Iris was such a fighter, she could light up anyone's mood just by her smile,  she had the most beautiful smile, we unfortunately never got the opportunity to hear her laugh but I'm sure it would have been such a heart felt laugh. She was the goofist girl, she was always taking off her heart rate monitors. She loved to listen to music her favorite artists were Post Malone ( i know! great taste in music even as a baby) and Imaginary Future and classical stuff.  Her eyes we the most beautiful shade of brown, if the sun could hit them just right her eyes looked like honey and were almost hypnotizing and her hair was the thing everyone loved! she was famous in her cardiac unit for her hair everyone would come in to just see and play with her hair.

Whatever money is raised for her will so toward her final resting place and grave marker. Iris deserves that, she deserves to finally rest because all her time on earth she had to prove that she was strong and that she was a fighter but her fight is now over. The best way I can describe Iris as her mother is light , her spark was something out of this world and at times frightening because Iris was a super nova, something truly blinding. I know i and my family will never be the same. I mean how can you, how can anyone ever truly go back to normal after witnessing and experiencing something as ah inspiring as our beautiful Iris Jane
