Irma's Brain Tumor Surgery

I am reaching out for help for my mom, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor; a Meningioma on December 6th, 2022. Her health has been deteriorating since April 2022 when she had her first seizure, not showing symptoms until recently. I didn’t know that she had a tumor, I thought it was her diabetes the whole time, so I worked with doctors to help stabilize her blood sugar levels.

However, in October 2022, she convulsed again, just six months after, even though the doctors said it wouldn’t happen again. But she has kept getting worse every day, getting weaker, having memory loss, dizziness, and seizures in her right leg and arm.

Looking for more help to investigate my mother’s dilemma, I sought support from a Foundation in El Salvador that paid for CT and MRI exams to find out why she was not improving. The diagnosis of the tumor was something very hard and difficult to assimilate but at last I had an answer.

Her official diagnosis is Meningioma, measuring 5.1 cm coronally, 5.5 cm transverse axis and 6.9 cm in AP diameter, mainly covering her left hemisphere, and a small part of the right hemisphere, just behind her left eye. The type of tumor will be known once the first surgery and a biopsy are done. Apparently, she was born with that tumor and it has been growing for at least 10 years, her only symptom was heavy headaches that stopped just recently.

It’s a high-risk surgery but she needs it urgently. Doctors have given her 2 months to live if we do nothing, 1 month has already passed. She’s 58 without medical insurance that I can pay for, my only option is the Diagnostic Hospital where they can do the surgery she needs. It will also be required for her to be intubated for 2 days prior to surgery, and at least 2 days in the ICU after surgery.

My mom is one of the most intelligent and strongest person I have ever met, with an excellent memory and so kind to others despite the problems and traumas in her life. She always remembers the good in others and never the bad. I admire her for that.

I had never seen anyone having a seizure and it was so shocking to see how that was happening to my mom. Not knowing what to do and think and always feeling that I would lose her every time. And now, seeing her in a state where she barely speaks, walks, forgets everything and struggles with depression hurts a lot. Due to her rapid deterioration from her tumor, she looks older and has lost weight since April. It hasn't even been a year since she started to show symptoms but she looks very different now.

Despite the fact that I have sought help from different people and places, I have not been able to raise the money to to pay the cost required by the hospital yet for her surgery. I still don't know if I'll need more money because it's her first surgery, and she probably would need more days in ICU, but for now it's what I’m asking for. I never had many friends because of my shyness, but now I feel desperate and I’m willing to ask any generous stranger for help, in order to help my mom because I am so scared to lose her. Even if the amount is small, I will be very grateful if you help me to cover the cost of her surgery with any donation. Shares are also welcomed.

UPDATE:

On February 2, 2023, she had her brain tumor surgery after she was diagnosed with a Meningioma that could have ended her life because of how big it was. But thanks to everyone's help, with your donations and shares on social media, we managed to raise a considerable amount for her surgery.

This was also achieved thanks to the fact that we found a third opinion with a doctor at a more reasonable cost. God put this great doctor in our path, which made the surgery possible, for which we will be infinitely grateful.

Her surgery lasted 6 hours, and since she was very weak, she was not given general anesthesia and was kept awake throughout the process. Fortunately, everything turned out well. A few days after her surgery she fell into seizures and I feared losing her, but she has been very strong in getting back on her feet, and after being hospitalized for a few days she recovered again.

Ever since her operation, little by little my mom has been returning to the person she was before her tumor diagnosis and operation. Before her operation, she didn't speak, she remained in a lethargic state, she forgot everything, her movements were not coordinated, she suffered seizures and couldn't walk or get up on her own, weakness was immense in her body and her brain was suffering from the pressure of the tumor.

However, the glimpses of her recovery were noticeable since the first day after surgery, and since then, she has been improving; she's started to become more independent, talking a LOT, and very cheerful! She can now get up and walk without help, cooks and bathes on her own, and thanks to the medicine her seizures haven't returned for months. Her diabetes symptoms also leveled off well after surgery. The transformation has been amazing.

My mother loves her bandanas and colorful hats and is eager to get her life back and do all the things she did before her sickness, even if it's not completely the same.

Cirugía de Tumor Cerebral para Irma Ortega

Estoy buscando ayuda para mi mamá, quien fue diagnosticada el 6 de diciembre 2022 con un tumor cerebral; un meningioma. Su salud ha venido deteriorándose desde marzo del 2022 cuando tuvo su primera convulsión, al no dar síntomas hasta hace poco no sabía que tenía ese tumor, pensé que sólo era su diabetes, pero con ayuda de los médicos logró nivelarse.

Sin embargo, en octubre 2022 convulsionó de nuevo, pese a que los médicos dijeron que no volvería a suceder. Cada día se ponía peor, con mucha debilidad, pérdida de memoria, mareos, convulsiones focales en su pierna y brazo derecho.

No satisfecha con eso, busqué ayuda en una Fundación para poder costear los exámenes del TAC y Resonancia Magnética y saber por qué ella no mejoraba. La noticia del tumor fue algo muy duro y difícil de asimilar, pero al menos ya tenía una respuesta.

Hasta ahora, su diagnóstico es Meningioma, midiendo en sentido coronal 5.1 cm, eje transversal 5.5 cm y en el diámetro AP 6.9 cms, abarca principalmente su hemisferio izquierdo, y una pequeña parte del hemisferio derecho. El tipo de tumor se sabrá una vez se haga la primera cirugía y una biopsia. Al parecer nació con ese tumor y viene creciendo desde hace -mínimo- 10 años, su único síntoma fueron fuertes migrañas que se detuvieron hace poco.

Es una cirugía muy arriesgada pero la necesita urgentemente, le dieron 2 meses sino se hace nada- ya pasó 1 mes. Tiene 58 años y aún no aplica a un Seguro Médico que yo pueda pagar o tratar el problema pronto, mi única opción es el hospital privado donde le pueden hacer la cirugía que necesita. Necesita estar 2 días entubada previo a la cirugía, y mínimo 2 días de UCI después de la cirugía.

Mi mamá es una de las personas mas inteligentes y fuertes que he conocido, con una excelente memoria, pese a sus problemas y traumas de su vida siempre ha tratado de ser amable con todos, recordando lo bueno de los demás y nunca lo malo, admiro mucho su humildad.

Nunca había visto a nadie convulsionar y fue demasiado impactante ver que le sucedía eso a ella, sin saber qué hacer y pensar que la perdería en varias ocasiones. Y ahora, verla en el estado que está donde apenas habla, apenas camina, se le olvida todo y donde lucha con una depresión duele mucho. Debido a su rápido deterioro por el tumor, ha perdido mucho peso y se ha envejecido rápidamente desde entonces. No ha pasado ni un año desde que ella era muy diferente—

Pese a que he buscado ayuda de todos lados, no he logrado reunir el dinero para poder pagar el costo dado por el Hospital. Aun no sé si necesitaré mas dinero porque es su primera cirugía, pero por ahora es la ayuda que pido. No tengo muchos amigos, pero ahora me siento desesperada y estoy dispuesta a pedirle ayuda a un generoso desconocido con tal de ayudarla porque tengo miedo y me duele verla sufrir.

Aún si la cantidad es pequeña, estaré muy agradecida de que ella reciba ayuda para poder cubrir los gastos de su primera cirugía. Y si no pueden donar pero quisieran ayudar, pueden hacerlo compartiendo con sus conocidos, también se les agradece mucho.

ACTUALIZACIÓN:

El pasado 2 de febrero del 2023 Irma tuvo su cirugía de tumor cerebral después que se le diagnosticara un Meningioma que podía acabar con su vida por lo grande que era. Pero gracias a la ayuda de todos, por sus donaciones y por compartir la campaña en redes sociales logramos recaudar una cantidad considerada para su cirugía, esto también pudo ser logrado gracias a que encontramos una tercera opinión, con un costo diferente. Dios nos puso en nuestro camino a un gran médico, por lo cual estaremos infinitamente agradecidos.

Su cirugía tuvo una duración de 6 horas, dado que ella estaba muy débil no se le propinó anestesia general y se le mantuvo despierta durante todo el proceso, afortunadamente todo salió bien.

Unos días después de su cirugía recayó convulsionando y temí perderla, pero ha sido muy fuerte en volver a levantarse, y luego de estar hospitalizada se recuperó nuevamente.

Desde su operación, mi mamá ha dado un giro de 180 grados, poco a poco volviendo a ser la persona que era antes.

Antes de su operación, ella no hablaba, permanecía en estado letárgico, olvidaba todo, sus movimientos no eran coordinados, sufría convulsiones y no podia caminar ni levantarse por su cuenta, su debilidad era inmensa en su cuerpo y su cerebro sufría la presión del tumor. Sin embargo, su cambio fue notable desde el primer día de su cirugía, y desde entonces ha venido mejorando; ella está empezando a independizarse, habla mucho y muy animada! Camina y se levanta sin ayuda, cocina y se baña por su cuenta, y gracias a la medicina sus convulsiones no han regresado desde hace meses. Sus síntomas de diabetes también lograron nivelarse mucho después de la cirugía. Es increíble lo mucho que el tumor estaba tomando de ella.

Y a pesar de que ella ama sus gorritos y binchas coloridas, desea recuperar su vida y volver a hacer todas las cosas que hacía antes de enfermarse, aún si no todo es completamente igual.

El primer paso en su recuperación lo ha dado.

Agradezco de todo corazón a las personas que nos donaron para esta campaña, sin su ayuda mi mamá nunca hubiese podido hacerse esta cirugía.
