Isaac Middle Skateboard Club

My name is Mr. Wood, and I'm a 7th grade U.S. History Teacher at Isaac Middle School in Phoenix, AZ. I've worked here for three years, and recently I've started up a skateboarding club for my students.
Isaac Middle School serves a low income community in Phoenix, AZ with a demographic that is 97% Hispanic. I'm trying to get students pumped about reading and writing using something both my students and I love--skateboarding! We meet several times a week. We practice skateboarding, but I also have my club members read articles about the history of skateboarding, bios about their favorite skaters, and other skateboarding related issues.
The problem is that many students don't have the money to purchase a skateboard or skateboard equipment. I have students approaching me all the time to join, but they don't have a skateboard. I have purchased two extras, but as a teacher, my money only goes so far. I'm hoping to buy and provide at least five more skateboards to keep this club rolling!
I need the funds asap! The sooner we can secure equipment the sooner we can recruit more students into the club.
When I was in 7th-12th grade, skateboarding was my passion. It gave me an identity. It gave me something to hold onto and to improve at. I hated reading. The only thing I read was my Transworld and Thrasher magazines that my dad purchased for me. Many of my students truly struggle with life and I want a way to connect with them. Through this skateboarding connection, I'm hoping to inspire them to develop the talent of skateboarding and reading!
Can't wait to have your support. My students and I will be more than grateful!!!
