Orphanage Boarding School, Kenya

Assalamu alaikum/Hello :)

Back Story

I was lucky enough to have visited Kenya this summer for a family holiday. Aside from all the exploring and the tourist attractions; being a teacher myself, a part of me was really interested in education in Kenya. I couldn't help but check out the quality of teaching taking place. I was genuinely impressed overall!

My family and I visited an Islamic boarding school for orphans and disadvantaged children located in a small village in Mombasa. This was one of the most eye opening experience in my life, I genuinely don't think I can describe the overwhelming sadness that I had felt.

The boarding school

This boarding school was set up by a couple who also live in the same building as the students. This couple not only teach free of charge, but they were so humble, raising these children as if they were their own. They have two buildings, one for the boys managed by the husband and one for the girls managed by the wife.

The students' ages ranged from 3 to 18. The main focus of their studies consisted of Quran, especially hifdh (learning the whole Quran off by heart). The students only graduate from the boarding school once they are able to finish the Quran.

What I want to raise money for

Having spent a day there, I was not able to leave until I made a promise to myself that I would collect money to help in fixing the building for both the boys and girls at the boarding school. These are currently their living conditions:

The two pictures above show the kitchen.

The toilet.

Toilet and shower.

This is their dining area.

This is their only classroom (Girls building)

This is the boy's bedroom

These are the younger girls who are all orphans at the school.

This is the girl's bedroom (not ideal when it rains in Kenya)

Finally, our donations will go towards rebuilding the toilets, kitchen, classrooms and bedrooms. If possible, the couple would also like to extend the building as the bedrooms are cramped in the girl's building. The final picture above shows a bedroom that is shared between approximately 35 girls.

May Allah accept our efforts, especially the efforts of the couple who are providing islamic knowledge and a place to raise orphans and disadvantaged children.
Ameen
