I've got rare blood & need dialysis. Help Sibby!
Donation protected
Sibby has rare blood and is alive because of an amazing medical staff willing to help with ongoing, life-saving dialysis treatments. Medical bills have surpassed $30,000 to date, but we aren't giving up. Your donations will help keep treatments going.
From Lindsey, Sibby's cat mom:
Sibby is one of two sweet babies I credit with saving my life many years ago. She’s a tortoiseshell tabby with enough personality for three cats, and that personality makes her incredibly loveable and absolutely unbearable to lose. She's 11 years old, and has lived with me in 7 homes, and turned every roommate I’ve had into a cat lover (even if only the littlest bit). My precocious child decided a lily petal that had fallen on the floor was something she wanted to eat (as she generally wants to eat everything) and it landed her in the ICU at NC State Veterinary hospital. The many doctors and staff I’ve spoken with have mentioned how common lily poisonings are, and how often owners have either no idea they can be harmful or no idea exactly how deadly they can be—even the pollen from a lily can cause acute kidney injury in cats.
For those on Reddit, Lindsey has been sharing updates.
She was first admitted to the Blue Pearl Emergency Vet on November 17. Within a day it became apparent that Sibby’s kidneys had completely shut down and she wouldn’t have a shot at survival without dialysis. The dialysis team at NC State took a chance by accepting her because she has a very rare blood type for cats — type B — and without the appropriate amount of donor blood it would be impossible to proceed with dialysis. She has been in treatment for two weeks and it appears she may need another two weeks to know whether she is capable of recovery. The people at NC State have gone above and beyond to find blood for her. They’ve contacted every blood bank in the country that sells her blood type, and people have been bringing in their cats to donate blood for her! People are calling in favors from colleagues and friends and I’m so humbled by the kindness and generosity people are showing us to fight for little Sibby. She is also fighting through additional complications, and on more than one occasion, it has been safest to assume she would not make it. That said, we have seen some good progress the last few days and are hopeful she stays the course!
I am fortunate enough to have pet insurance through Trupanion, which I got because I never wanted to have to make a choice about my pet’s life and treatment based on my ability to pay for it. However, even without paying the full cost of treatment, the bill is adding up. I couldn’t live with myself if I stopped now, without doing everything in my power to save her; a village has helped get her this far and we need a village to get her the rest of the way. That’s where we need your help. Her medical bills to date have surpassed $30,000. Anything you’re willing to give, including positive vibes, will be very much appreciated (and may help save Sibby’s life).
Many thanks to the doctors, techs, students, and other staff who have been taking care of my baby as though she were their own. I’m hopeful that Sibby’s accident can raise awareness around this issue for other pet owners.
