firefighter fired for cancer

My name is Phil Maldari. Back in August of 2012, at the age of 42, I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. A day that changed my life forever. Before the cancer, I was a firefighter for Eastchester Fire District in Eastchester, New York, happily married with 3 children. I spent my days working and spare time being a husband and father. My wife worked as well, so that as parents, we could give our children a good life.
Once diagnosed, I immediately made an appointment at Sloan Kettering Hospital and met with Dr Bochner. We scheduled my surgery and I had chemo. I notified the fire department that I had bladder cancer. During my recovery it was brought to my attention that since I was so young to get bladder cancer (the average age is 73), it was most likely caused by my work environment(diesel fumes, carcinogens from fires, temeporary fire houses, etc). I hired John Black as my retirement attorney and we put my paperwork into the state. While I waited to hear from NYS retirement system, the fire department was not very sympathetic and I even filed a workplace violence report against the chief for verbally screaming at me over the phone, stating that I need to stop living in a dream world and that I am fine. After about 6 months the NYS retirement system sent me to their doctor, Dr Costin, for an evaluation. Dr Costin, after the examination, felt my cancer was caused by my job and in his expert opinion I was permanently disabled as a firefighter. He went on to tell me that there are so many things I can not do such as tile work, or anything with varnishes or glues because of the fumes. I can not paint, I can not be close to certain copy machines in offices, I can not work in a dry cleaner, I can not drive a truck and the list continues. In August of 2013, the state denied my retirement and the fire department fired me because I was out of work for one year. Imagine in this day and age, a civil servant, in a union, gets fired. I hired a new a attorney for my retirement appeal, Warren Roth, which is still dragging on and I hired a labor attorney, Richard Corenthal to represent me in a wrongful termination case against the fire department. In the meantime, I won my worker's compensation case proving that my injury(cancer) was work related and the fire department appealed it. All of my cases are waiting for decisions to be rendered, which from 2012 until now, has been very stressful and torturous, with no light at the end of my tunnel.
It is now 2015, I still have no answers, no income (other than my wife's minimal $35,000 yearly for a family of 5), and no medical insurance. My house is in foreclosure and I am behind on my children's tuition payments. I also owe my attorneys legal fees to keep my cases going. My older son got very depressed over this whole situation watching us struggle and stress. He even withdrew from a semester of college and had to come home for treatment . Currently his medication without insurance is $997.00 per month.
I am not the type of guy who ever looks for an easy way out.  I had 2 rotator cuff surgeries and a knee surgery when I was an active fire fighter and as soon as I was cleared for duty, I went right back to work. This is not a simple surgery, this is cancer, a disease that kills and I have doctors telling me that my job caused it, so am I supposed to gamble with cancer?
