Mission to Manila

Hello! My name is Sarah Dorrell, and I am taking a trip to Manila, Philippines in late January. Just a month ago I was all set to continue into grad school this Spring at High Point University after graduating in December, but felt led to postpone those plans a little last minute! One of the best things about taking a semester off is the opportunity I now have to travel to the Philippines and serve with Kid's International Ministries in Manila for 6 weeks.
KIM Video:
Kid's International Ministries (KIM) is an organization that seeks to "meet the needs of abandoned children and poor by 'showing' them the Gospel." I was able to work with KIM for the first time last summer and see all the incredible ways that God is using His people to change the lives of the local community in Manila. There are so many wonderful things happening in this place, and the people are absolutely infectious with their attitudes and spirit despite very little material wealth.
KIM has several different ministries going on constantly, so there is always a place to serve. There is a children's home that cares for nearly 40 abandoned or abused children, 17 of which are in the nursery, as well as a birthing clinic, dental clinic, food service that takes food into poor communities on a rotation twice a day, and a home for girls called the JAZ home. The JAZ home houses roughly 35 high school aged girls from abusive backgrounds, and they are some of the most incredible people I have ever met. Most of my time will be spent with these girls and the kids in the children's home. I will be flexible to whatever needs there are during my time there, but for now I plan to spend my time tutoring, assisting the full-time workers in the nursery (as this is their most populated, and craziest!, portion of the home), and encouraging the kids to grow in their relationships with God, their Father who will never abandon them.
More of the kids! (Video by friend Caleb Hatfield-2011)
In addition to working with KIM in Manila, there is also a great need in the southern island of Tacloban. A large typoon recently struck Tacloban, following a previous devastating storm last year which killed over 6000 people. The people in this area have suffered unbelievably, and they are in a process of rebuilding and clean-up. So in addition to my time with the children in Manila, I also hope to spend a portion of my time in Tacloban to assist in the restoration of the areas that were most affected by these tragic storms.
I would greatly appreciate if you would prayerfully consider supporting me in this journey. For starters, I am raising money for the flight, which is just under $1000. Ultimately, I hope to raise $2500, which includes housing, food, and airfare for the 6 weeks I plan to stay. I am so excited to see the children again to build deeper relationships with them, and be flexible to God's work in their lives and mine through this opportunity to serve and spread the love of Jesus. Thank you for your prayers and support, and may God bless you during this Christmas season!
