Jack Smith Memorial and Xmas Store

Jack C Smith, who was my best friend, passed away suddenly on December 15, 2016. I have known Jack for 25 years and what I know is that he was a person who gave of himself tirelessly. That was certainly true for myself and my sons as well as many of my sons' friends, plus he was one of the City of Long Beach's most prolific and hard working civic volunteers. He worked with many neighborhood associations, was a founding member of Better Balance for Long Beach (BBLB: which cleaned up and renovated 14th St Park among other things), and also worked on several city commissions. All of this was done without any pay.
One of his most proud accomplishments was working with BBLB to initiate and run the One-Day Christmas Store "Shopping With Dignity". For nine years, this event has created a place where people who did not have the means to buy Christmas presents would be invited to come and "shop" for free in an environment that supported their needs. Not just the parents, but the children too, had an experience of being able to choose presents that would be a special gift from them to their loved one. This activity was a resounding affirmation of exactly what Christmas is all about: love and dignity.
Since Jack gave his time away for free, now that he has passed, he did not leave enough funds for his memorial. This campaign will pay for a Memorial to Jack (which is anticipated to be held on Saturday January 14) in Long Beach. After paying for the Memorial, the balance will be given to BBLB to help fund the Christmas Store 2017, which will be held in Jack's honor.
Since Jack is so well known in the community, we expect a large turn out of his many friends, his comrades in volunteer work, as well as many of the city staff and elected officials. We need to select a venue that will seat hundreds. We also want to have enough left over to kick start the Christmas Store 2017. Please help this campaign with whatever amount that you can. This is a simple way to say thank you to Jack for all that he has done for us.
