Below you will find more detailed descriptions from both Jackie, and her Strength and Conditioning coach, Aaron regarding this fundraiser on Jackie's behalf.
I am Schann Miller, Jackie's best-friend/sister. I set up this platform to allow Jackie's story to be shared. I hope to allow those that have followed her return to sport journey an opportunity to support her while she competes on an international stage this August. Watching Jackie transform her life and health over the last few years has been awe inspiring. Ive had the honor of cheering her on from the swim deck at back-to-back National Championships the last 2 years. Ive also had the honor of helping her take her first steps after back surgery. It's been a wild ride and I am so very proud of her discipline and determination.
Hello everyone! My name is Aaron Young, and I am the owner of BBA Fitness. I am hosting a fundraiser for a client and friend of mine, Jackie Wilson. She has qualified to compete in World Aquatics Masters Championships for swimming in Kyushu, Japan. She is signed up and preparing for the meet, which is only 8 weeks away! She will be competing 8/2 - 8/11. Her 5 events will be the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, and 200m backstroke.
Jackie's story:
June 2020: 294 lbs. In daily pain. 3 spinal surgeries. 1 titanium spinal fusion. 2 veterbral fusions. Daily medications for peripheral neuropathy and pain management, as well as poor quality of life/inability to perform activities of daily living without pain. On track for additional surgeries and lifelong disability.
June 2021: Starts with BBA Fitness.
June 2023: 184 lbs. Swims 4x each week (about 4000m each practice), lifting, and additional cardio 3x a week. Swimming the same times, or faster than career swims at age 19. No daily medications. Minimal neuropathy symptoms. Total change in body composition and quality of life. All 5 qualifying events were Top 10 finishes at US Masters Nationals, and Gold Medal finishes for the USMS Southern Zone Championships.
"Training with BBA Fitness has changed my entire life trajectory. From constant pain and despair to consistent progress and personal bests. I never thought I would return to the pool in my life, Aaron encouraged me and supported the crazy training of a swimmer. Because of Aaron's coaching, I am a better athlete at 36 years old than I ever was in my teen/college career." - Jackie
Even though she is representing Team USA, all competition costs and travel expenses in Masters Swimming are the responsibility of the athlete. It is an honor for me to set up this fundraiser in an effort to help offset the financial burden of competing internationally. Her overall travel and competition expenses will be approximately $3,000. I am so proud of the progress she has made in my time training with her and am excited to do my part in continuing to support her odd defying post-injury swimming career.
