Jackman Middle School Murals
Donation protected
We are asking for $20,000 to purchase painting supplies and pay local artists to paint multiple murals on our middle school campus.
Jackman.
It's a name that runs deep in the hearts of many people and the community of South Sacramento.
The pandemic has been challenging for our students and families. It has prevented our community from being together and providing supports in person. However, it has also moved us to think of how we can be better and explore additional ways to uplift those we serve.
One opportunity quarantining has encouraged is enjoying outdoor spaces and exploring the beauty of our region. There are fantastic murals/street art in our own backyard -- Sacramento has some amazing artists! The inspiration of these unique art pieces has ignited our desire to bring this beauty to Jackman and introduce our students to phenomenal local art and artists.
We have a great campus with a lot of plain space. Our vision is to have murals ranging in size and themes around the walls of our campus. Unfortunately, we don’t have a budget for this. We have amazing families that work well with us and support us in any way they are able to, but the reality is we don’t have a booster fund to use for these types of things.
We are reaching out to get donations so we can access some of the incredible artists (hopefully even some Valley Region alumni ) and purchase painting supplies to make this dream a reality. Murals cost thousands of dollars and we also recognize the importance of valuing artists' time and efforts. Our goal is to put this money back into our community by providing for the artists that help decorate our campus and inspire our students.
A little about us: Samuel Jackman Middle School (about to enter our 30th year!) is located off Mack Road in South Sacramento and is a part of the Elk Grove Unified School District. Our campus has a veteran staff that is committed to working with our community to educate our students. We have just over 1000 7th and 8th grade students who normally fill our halls with laugher and learning. This year they are “zooming” in for lessons and activities. We have rigorous academic classes that include a thriving electives program, a comprehensive after school program that combines academic enrichment and recreational activities, and a Newcomer Family Welcome Center about to open. A third of our students speak a language other than English for a total of 15 different languages. We are a universal free lunch school where all students eat breakfast and lunch for free. The student population at Samuel Jackman Middle School beautifully mirrors the ethnic and cultural diversity of our neighborhood (our student population is almost half Latino, a quarter Asian and a quarter Black).
Please reach out to Justine Fuller if you would like to come by to see the space or if this is something you would be interested in participating in. You can reach her at [email redacted].
This $20,000 will help us to achieve the goal of providing our students with visual art representing their own cultures that has been created by local artists.
