Jackson Eagle Project at Sherwood Island
Donation protected
Hi, My name is Jackson. I'm a Life Scout with Troop 36 in Westport. I'm fundraising to support my Eagle Project at Sherwood Island State Park.
With your support, we will be able to purchase the beachgrass needed to restore a large section of East Beach.
What We’re Doing: Planting beachgrass
Where: East Beach @ Sherwood island
Summary: This project will restore dunes on the East Beach of Sherwood Island. Beachgrass will be planted to create new dunes and reinforce existing dunes. Our work will protect the beach from erosion and bring the added benefit of creating a healthy habitat for wildlife.
Coastal erosion affects all regions of the United States. In Connecticut, 9% of the shoreline is considered critically eroding. At Sherwood Island, the deterioration is 1-2 feet per year lost to Long Island Sound. Twenty years ago, officials bulldozed all the dunes away at Sherwood Island. The shoreline is slowly being eroded into the sea. The beach is weak. Creating dunes and reinforcing existing ones will be the first step toward strengthening the beach.
When: April 23, 2022; rain day April 24; last weekend of spring vacation
What’s Needed: $1200, additional $ over this amount will go towards purchasing additional seagrass.
Materials: Beachgrass & plastic dibbers
Beachgrass: Beachgrass is sold in bundles of 200 stems. Each bundle costs $59, including tax and shipping. Cape Coastal nursery is where I will purchase beachgrass.
Plastic dibbers: $80; Two 6-Packs of Zenport GA401 Dibber; These are the handheld tools that punch a hole in the sand for planting. Available @ Amazon
Thank you for supporting my Eagle Scout Project and helping to protect our coastline.
