Jackson Riley's Spinal Surgery
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Brittany Rein and I am the mother of 2 sweet boys, Jackson - 5 and Spencer - 2.5 years old; daddy/hubby's name is Andrew.
Jackson was born premature and spent over 2 weeks in the NICU. He was diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerbral Palsy at 15 months old. Currently he is receiving 3.5 hours a week of Physical Therapy and a half hour of both Occupational and Speech Therapy.
Jackson will be undergoing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) on June 9th of this year.
SDR is a surgery done on the lower spinal cord to reduce spasticity (high muscle tone) in the legs. Certain abnormal nerve fibers that cause high muscle tone are cut. The goal of SDR is to relax the muscles by identifying and cutting only those nerve fibers that contribute to spasticity. Reducing or eliminating this spasticity will allow the brain to control his muscles, instead of the spasticity, and the end goal is for his muscles to become stronger and for him to walk unassisted.
He will spend up to 6 weeks in the hospital for intensive PT & OT, so Andrew and I will be switching off weeks staying with Jackson at Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando. The other will stay with Spencer and try to keep some kind of normalcy for him.
This is going to be a very difficult time for us but I know we are going to get through it because of the support and love we have from our friends and family. A prayer goes a long way! We love you all!
