A portion of the funds raised will be used to support a living donor, who, after being determined healthy by a primary care doctor, will need to be flown to Vancouver to begin examinations with the Renal team. These funds will also provide the assistance we need to house a living donor and their support person until the living donor is completely healed. I also intend to offer both a living donor and their support person financial assistance for transportation, time spent not working, and a place to stay during recovery.

I’m Jade Ariana Fair. I am an herbalist, artist, and creative force in my communities. At the age of twelve I was diagnosed with Renal Disease, after an intuitive nurse drew blood work for me on a hunch, and I was rushed to the hospital to begin treatment and my lifelong journey as a Chronic Kidney Disease patient. I was placed on Peritoneal dialysis at age 12 and amazingly, at 14 I had recovered enough kidney function to come off and stay off of dialysis until this year at age 31. In January 2021 I moved to Victoria, BC from home in California to begin a three year program at Pacific Rim College.

 

In April 2021, I felt something was off and decided to go to the local emergency room and ask for lab work to see what was going on. After the stressors of more than a year of the pandemic, taking care of my mom while she recovered from cancer, and a huge international move, I just felt like I might be run down and was already planning to check in for the first time with an outpatient nephrologist as part of my routine care only two weeks later.

 

To my surprise, my lab work showed that I had 3% kidney function left and needed to be hospitalized immediately and start dialysis again. When I met my current nephrologist for the first time, he said it was only a matter of a couple of weeks before I began showing fatal complications and in his words when I came in, I was “running on fumes.” While I was in the hospital at the end of what was to be my first semester of my new program, I found myself confronting the realities of an adult life on dialysis for the first time. Doubts, fears and questions swirled inside me about my ability to complete my program as I spent my summer convalescing. Once I was treated and stable on dialysis again, I completed my semester with good marks, and discovered a level of strength and resolve that I didn’t know that I had. Looking forward to the future, I intend to develop myself as an herbalist and open my practice, and to continue to evolve as a practitioner and researcher.

For me, as a Renal Patient with 3% kidney function, my future also inevitably holds a transplant. My incredible nephrology team at Royal Jubilee Hospital has referred me for transplant, and now I am on the waitlist for an O positive donor. The other possibility is for a living donor who is also O positive to come forward.

 

 

The team at Royal Jubilee Hospital feels confident that I can find an O positive deceased donor match within the year that I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease, which starts the clock for my referral to transplant. That time is approaching in May 2022, and I am intending to raise the funds with the hope that either a match will be found on the list, or a living donor will come forward in 2022.

 

These funds will help me to receive a kidney transplant. They will also be used to support a live donor who, after being determined healthy by a primary care doctor, will need to be flown to Vancouver to begin examinations with the Renal team. These funds will also provide the assistance we need to house a living donor and their support person until the living donor is completely healed. I also intend to offer both a living donor and their support person financial assistance for transportation, time spent not working, and a place to stay during recovery. These funds will also be used to support mine and my mom’s living expenses for the three months we are required by the Renal care team to remain in Vancouver post surgery for follow up. I will also need mental health support pre- and post-transplant.

 

Kidney transplantation is a major life change and represents closure of a certain chapter of my life. I am ready to finish school, pursue my life’s work as an herbalist and artist, and continue to build something substantial through my practice that can be shared with my friends, family, and community. I need a kidney transplant in order to shine as brightly as I can and to continue to pursue life’s adventures as fiercely as I want to.
