Jai Ho Indian Cuisine - Tampa Riot Aftermath

On the night of Saturday, May 30th riots broke out on Fowler Avenue in Tampa in the plaza where Jai Ho Royale Indian Cuisine is located. Several businesses in the plaza were ransacked and looted, and two, Champs and Saigon Bay Vietnamese Restaurant, were burned and destroyed/severely damaged.

Because of the damages sustained to the plaza, the power was cut to the entire plaza, including Jai Ho Royale. After purchasing thousands of dollars worth of food to sustain the restaurant for the weekend buffets and the rest of the week, all was completely lost due to the power outage. A refrigeration system, dishes, and a food cart were stolen. Additionally, in the back of the restaurant, a small enclosed outdoor area sustained damages to the roof and fencing from looters attempting to break in.

The losses they have suffered after diminished business due to COVID-19, as well as, significant personal medical concerns, have made it impossible for Roopa and Venkata to pay their rent and replace their food inventory. In addition to this, they have had to shut their doors and lay off employees for a duration of time, of which they are uncertain. Their employees also depend on the restaurant for their livelihoods. Their business will be significantly impacted this summer by the damage sustained to their plaza (as well as future construction deterring business).

The owners have served the Tampa community since 2009, and it breaks their hearts that they may have to shut their doors permanently, ending their service to Tampa and employment for their much-appreciated employees.
