Jake Allen's Healing Fund

Jake is an adventurous, active and passionate young man.  He is quick to make a friend, has an amazing sense of humor and can be counted on to be ‘the life of the party’.  He is a pilot and airport planner, with a passion for anything aviation related.  He loves traveling and outdoor activities.  He will tell you he’s happiest sitting around a campfire with friends and family.  He enjoys camping, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, boating, water skiing, snowboarding, motorcycles…you name it, he’s probably done it! Tragically, Jake’s adventures are on hold for now.

On Saturday August 1st, after days of experiencing a high fever, nausea, vomiting and increasingly severe abdominal pain, Jake was seen at an emergency room near his home in Phoenix, Arizona.  Testing revealed that he had an abscess on his large intestine that had ruptured, allowing a deadly infection to spread throughout his abdomen.  Jake was immediately rushed into surgery, where a portion of intestine had to be removed in a very complex procedure.   Due to irreparable damage from the infection, his spleen was also removed and he incurred permanent damage to his kidneys.  His doctors say that 12 more hours without treatment and he would have died.   They expressed amazement by what must be his incredibly high threshold for pain.  Jake’s surgery went well and he is currently on IV antibiotics and is being monitored closely by hospital staff.  It was our hope that Jake would be released from the hospital this week, but after five days he has started running a temperature and his white blood cell count is up, so he will, unfortunately, have to remain in the hospital until he stabilizes. Of course, he can’t have visitors because of the current pandemic and not being able to see him or comfort him in person is extraordinarily difficult for his loved ones.

Jake is very lucky to have his life but has a long road to recovery in front of him.  Jake is going to require in-home nursing care after his release and another major surgery to fully repair his large intestine, after three to four months of healing.  His mom is taking time from work to care for him as he recovers.  His doctors say that without his spleen Jake is much more vulnerable to viruses of all kinds, which in the age of COVID-19 will further complicate his full recovery. While Jake is fortunate to have medical insurance, his out of pocket expenses and the loss of wages are expected to be a significant burden.  For those of you who know Jake well, you know that he is a warm, generous and loving soul who does not know a stranger and will go out of his way to help others.  Today, Jake needs our help.  We, his friends and family, would be so appreciative of anything you can do to help support Jake during this difficult time so that he can fully focus on his recovery.  Monetary donations, if you are able, are much appreciated, but so are prayers, kind words and moral support of any kind.  Even just sharing this post widely would be so helpful.

Thank you all for taking the time to read and share this post.  We will be providing updates on Jake’s progress regularly.
