Jake Hickey's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
This page is being created by family on behalf of Jake Hickey. As many of you already know, Jake was involved in a terrible accident while riding his motorcycle. The accident happened early in the morning on July 24th while riding to work. The accident took place on 495 South in Westford at the Boston Road Exit. Some of you may have seen the aerial footage on the news. We would like to spare the details of the accident to everyone, but what is important to note is that he was NOT found at fault. As a result of the accident he was air lifted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where the AMAZING medical staff took over.

After multiple diagnostic imaging and consultation amongst the trauma team, it was determined that Jake had suffered a fracture of his T-11 vertebrae in his back and multiple fractures in his left ankle. It was then, that the trauma team decided that the fracture in his back needed emergency surgery to alleviate pressure being placed on his spinal cord, which was causing loss of sensation and movement below the waist.  After, what seemed like an eternity, we received word that the surgery was successful. As a result of the surgery, his back has been fused to support the area of the fracture.

The doctors then began work on his left ankle. In order to stabilize the multiple fractures in his ankle, the doctors had to apply an external fixation. He has since had a second surgery and a third is scheduled for the near future to correct the fractures. The Spinal Trauma team is hopeful that he may regain some use of his legs, but warn that the road to recovery is going to be long with no guarantees.

After two weeks at Beth Israel, Jake has since been transferred to Spaulding Rehab Center in Charlestown. He is there currently, and has settled in nicely. His spirits are up and he is looking forward to working hard on his rehab. I’m sure many of you are looking for an opportunity to visit and Jake would love to see all of you, however, he has asked for some more time to recover and regain some strength before visiting with everyone.

The reason we are creating this page is to ask for support from family and friends to help offset the cost of the numerous medical bills that have already started to pile up. In addition, we will also be utilizing the funds to allow for a smooth transition home. Before Jake is discharged from Spaulding, proof of suitable living arrangements need to be met, which means several modifications will need to be made to his parents’ house. Although the doctors are hopeful that he will walk again, it’s likely he will leave Spaulding in a wheelchair. In order to make accommodations for Jake’s return home, we will need to add several ramps, railings, a modified bathroom, and widened doorways. In addition to the medical bills, these costs will also pile up quickly.

We have already received an incredible amount of support from family and friends. For that, we are forever grateful. If there is any way you can help support Jake’s cause, our family would deeply appreciate it. If you cannot support Jake financially, we would also be thankful if you could spread the word of this fundraiser in any way. We welcome any and all shares on social media to help spread the word to support him in his recovery. We are so thankful and blessed that Jake is still with us and we are equally thankful that he has all of you to support and be a part of his recovery. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you.
