We are the loving parents of Jakob Dawe who is a gr.10 student at Queen Elizabeth High School in Conception Bay South. Jakob has beaten the odds from the moment he was born on Rememberance Day in 2000, just over one pound at 24 weeks and surviving the loss of his twin brother Owen. He has overcome countless health challenges to become the sweet, loving, curious and happy boy he is today. He has always faced vision issues that he bravely overcame but due to a serious complication with his optic nerve has lost his remaining sight and is now blind. Despite all the excellent care he has received there are no other treatment options available here in Canada. Jakob now, along with the challenges of his autism has this devastating issue to face. He has an amazing spirit and it is heartbreaking to see the struggles he has to deal with on a daily basis.
After exhausting all options and putting him through countless tests we are optimistic because he has been accepted for a Stem Cell Bone Marrow Fraction treatment in on Jan. 29th. The only way that Jakob can access this leading edge treatment is to take him to Dubai. His diagnosis is Optic Nerve Atrophy and without a treatment like this he has no chance at recovering any vision.
The cost for this treatment is significant, (the base treatment cost is US$29,950) as are the challenges of getting Jakob to Dubai. The funds raised through this initiative are to cover the cost of the procedure and the base costs of traveling to UAE. As it's a clinical trial it is not covered by our Healthcare system.
We are very hopeful that this stem cell therapy can work for him and will give him usable sight. We are grateful for your support . Cyndi, Mark, Jakob and Noah Dawe
