Thank you all so much for your support and love and prayers for the entire Huss family.❤️
On February 28th, 2024 their sweet little family were going on an outing to take their son James to a basketball game and ice cream at the Convocation Center in Boone, NC when the worst happened. A Ford F150 struck Kyle (father) and James (5 years old) as they crossed the street. His mother Maria was right behind them and witness and rushed to there side when a miracle bystanders came and successfully performed CPR on her son. James was transported from Watagua Medical Center to the ICU at Brenners Children’s Hospital in Winston Salem.
We know he has suffered a skull fracture, and small brain bleed but is now in stable condition.
His father Kyle also is badly injured having suffered a compression fracture to his L1 and torn ligaments and other versions body injuries from taking the impact. He is being treated at the same hospital.
Maria will be an amazing and strong caregiver to her boys but will need help as they navigate how to heal and work.
Right now we are asking for $10,000 to cover 3 months of meals, temporary housing and basic living expenses while they begin to recover. We are hoping their health insurance will cover their care but do not know what is to come yet and are starting here.
For any specific questions Godmother Breezy (Bri Okamoto) is here to answer them and feel free to reach out - however I will be posting updates to this Bio as we know so you can continue to check back here to read how James and Kyle are doing.
Thank you all so much, and if a financial support isn’t an option for you. We totally understand. We ask that instead you pray for us, and send us your love by share this to your social media pages instead.
UPDATE Friday Evening: James has regained consciousness and awoken! Praise the Lord! It started Thursday evening with his eyes reacting to light sensors and the sound of his parents voices. This evening (Friday) he awoke and was able to say his first word which was “owww” and drink a sip of water which is a massive step in his journey and we are so thankful to be here now.
UPDATE: SATURDAY AM
James has officially been transferred out of the PICU. Great movement towards a full recovery. All baby steps but he is gathering all his strength while resting. His eyes will open and he will respond to commands. Letting us know he hears us and understands us. GOD is SO GOOD. The amount of love and support has been overwhelming to say the least. We are now asking for a goal of 30k. We have no idea what these medical costs will look like. We anticipate staying in Winston for the next couple of weeks and with potentially no work income. Thank you all for your generosity, love, support and prayers. We know our Heavenly Father is working and winning.
-Maria ❤️
SATURDAY PM UPDATE:
This evening we are asking for prayers for James specifically related to his speech. Right now we really need him to start saying some words to meet his next checkpoint in progress. He is responsive to our voice, we have been asking him to give us a thumbs up to answer us. Today we asked him if he was in pain, and he gave us a tiny thumbs up saying he was . It’s heartbreaking to see him like that. The doctors have to be careful not to give him strong pain meds because they don’t want to sedate him to prevent him from speaking. It’s a hard spot to watch him be in. But he is so so brave.
Kyle is also in considerable pain, his neck back and knee are extremely painful for him, moving is excruciating, he can’t find a comfortable position and has a full back brace and neck brace on. I’ve gotten them set up in an Airbnb in town to hopefully bank the rest.
I leave tomorrow (Sunday) and ask that Monday morning someone transport Kyle from his Airbnb in Winston to the hospital (8 minutes) and then someone take him back to the Airbnb on Monday night and the same thing Tuesday morning.
Thank you all so much ❤️
SUNDAY AM UPDATE:
We have rides for Kyle covered we believe Monday and Tuesday. Thank you!
SUNDAY AFTERNOON: Kyle was just re admitted into the ER/ is in the waiting room currently to get reevaluated as his pain worsens.
Our boy J is having a restful day. We got moved into a more private room so he is getting better sleep. We are still praying for his speech and relief of pain for our sweet boy.
Myself and Greg very sadly have to head back to our own homes this afternoon unfortunately for work for several days. So they would love visitors or help Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the hospital especially to help with Kyle. He is mostly wheelchair bound right now and needs help pushing getting around the hospital, driving.
SUNDAY PM and FUNDRAISING GOAL UPDATE:
Day 4 of praying and hoping. Every day that goes by that James is still in the hospital is a costly and scary one. While at first we were hoping the hospital stay would be over quickly, we are now understanding we may be here for a long then we want. Maria needs to be able to have time to completely focus on taking care of both her boys and is staying at the hospital round.
This next financial goal increase to $40,000 is what we believe to be a necessity going forward this year with no or limited income.
However, I want to ask for help from other people beside the pockets of our amazing friends and family.
My next ask to have our friends and family write emails to churches, nonprofits and corporate as well asking for donations and assistance that could come from larger donor pools that are also tax deductible.
I know often churches offer mortgage assistance to families going through this kinds of situations. If you are a church member please reach out to your church or others and ask if they would be willing to sponsor a month or two of Kyle and Maria’s Mortgage payments over the next year.
Someone in Boone who already knows Kyle and Maria address, please to reach out to the power company and tell them the situation and get them on the assistance program so they will hopefully cover there bills while we are in the hospital.
“Everyone who has contributed even through prayer we Thank you so so much. We have seen unbelievable generosity in so many ways our heart goes out to each and everyone of you.”
-Kyle ❤️
MONDAY PM UPDATE:
J is getting stronger and stronger every minute. We did some sitting up today, got our legs kicking and reached for our favorite stuffies. The Lord is so so so good. He’s going to talk so soon. I’m going to hear that little voice at any point. God is a faithful God. We went outside and got some fresh air and also have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow to check head, neck & spine. When all things come back clear sweet baby James will be able to take that super annoying and uncomfortable neck brace off. He has less and less things attached to him which only makes me happy and hopeful for a bright future. James is resilient, a fighter, and one of Gods sweet boys with a HUGE purpose.
-Maria ❤️
TUESDAY PM UPDATE
Strong dude James spoke his first word today. His PT nurse asked if his favorite color was blue, James responded with “yellow”. My heart fluttered. My baby tried so hard to say his favorite color and it brought me to tears of joy. We worked on sitting on a bench and we even STOOD UP! With help of course but these baby steps are incredible for J’s full recovery. No MRI results yet but that good news is just around the corner. Later this evening James and I decided to do some reading. We read Mario Bros (one of his favs) and the sweet boy would repeat after me. He’d even let me know what was next- he knows the story so well. I even got a little smile and giggle out it him while reading about Donky Kong and how he’s just as strong as that silly ape. God will be and is VICTORIOUS. This battle has already been won. Thank you to everyone following along. Don’t stop praying. Our praise is working. God is a faithful God.

WEDNESDAY PM UPDATE
James is back!!! I just had the best phone call ever from Maria AND James!!! He told me he was having so much fun in his room with his mommy and daddy and wanted to read some books! Can you believe it?! The Lord has done miraculous things in the last 48 hours! We are still waiting for the results of the MRI and they had some more X-rays done and are keeping an eye on the ligaments in his neck so he is still in his neck brace but no longer needing a feeding tube! He had his first real meal of chicken tenders and Mac and cheese today. He is standing and walking a little bit too. They are thinking of downgrading him to the rehabilitation hospital in the next couple days! An amazing step to his recovery! Thank you all for the prayers as we continue to pray over perfectly clear and healthy MRI results.
THURSDAY PM UPDATE:
James had another great day! He has his cheerful silly boy spirit back and is chatting up a storm!! He was even up practicing walking today too! Praise the lord! We got some results back from the MRI, and the doctors saw the types of brain damage they were expecting from the accident but nothing to raise alarm! James will do a little bit of speech therapy and physical therapy to get his balance and speech perfect again. But we expect him to thrive in that! He is ready to go home, but they will be moving to a rehabilitation hospital in Charlotte for his next steps in care. The doctors are going to continue to monitor and care for the ligaments in James neck, and he will wear his neck brace for the next month.
If anyone wants to bless James, he loves Donkey Kings Sister named Dixie and would love some children’s books to read about her.
FRIDAY PM UPDATE
I went to visit James today at the hospital today and my heart leaped with joy to see his bright smile and loud cheerful laugh! We read books and played on a drum pad and he had so much fun. He is doing so well they think they be able to downgrade the care level again and maybe even go home next week, we pray! James has been calling this time his “Doctor Break” and says he’s getting bigger and stronger. He definitely is. His Papa John and Auntie Brookie are here there this week too which was really amazing to have their love and support. They know how to put big big smiles on James face. James has been cracking jokes and being quiet the comedian himself too lately. It’s truly, a miracle to see this little boy laugh and talk and walk again. Thank you again to the outpouring of love and support from our friends and family.

SATURDAY PM UPDATE
Our strong and silly J man is doing so good. Doctors and nurses are calling him a wonder. He gets stronger every day. Is walking without assistance now and even tries to get out of bed without my help! (We spoke about how important it is to let mama know when he wants to get up) He’s really just back to being my outgoing and bubbly 5 year old and I cannot thank God enough for bringing his beautiful smile back to me. This experience was the most difficult thing I have ever gone through but it has to truly taught me the power of prayer & worship. God is so good. He was listening to all our prayers and thanks to everyone’s unmatched support, my faith has never been stronger. I am also beyond grateful for the community of both people that know us and those that don’t- who all came together to lift this sweet boy in prayer and healing. My heart is full of thanksgiving and all I can think about is how I can repay each and every one of you who prayed, reached out, donated, or simply shared this little guys story. J and I will be heading to Charlotte Monday to stay at the rehabilitation hospital for most likely no more than the week. We anticipate being back home no later than next Saturday evening! All the glory to God!! Thank you again to those of you keeping up with my brave boy. I pray each of you are blessed in abundance!
-Maria ❤️
THURSDAY PM UPDATE
We are so excited to say that TOMORROW James will be released to to go home!!!! Praise the Lord for bringing us here. Will update you all as I know more!
OUR FINAL UPDATE ❤️
Our baby boy is home!! Today we arrived to find some beautiful welcome home surprises after 17 days at a hospital. The pups were so happy to see J and gently provide a million kisses. He’s back home in his own bed, playing with all his toys (old & new), enjoying being a 5 year old again with lots of new stuffies to love on & eating all the yummy treats people have made for us. James will be doing outpatient therapy 2 to 3 times a week closer to home. We are aiming for his return to school to be on April 8th. This little dude is the strongest person, the most amazing kiddo and one of my biggest inspirations. Thank you to everyone! Thank you to our Heavenly Father. This miracle has not gone unnoticed and I will be my favorite testimony for the rest of time
Maria❤️
At this time we will be closing the GoFundMe after it has been a complete success . I never imagined when I started this how incredible our community would be, how generous you all have been is overwhelming. With your love, prayers and financial support you have lifted an immense burden off of this amazing family’s shoulders and given them the time and space to focus on the healing of James. This is such a happy ending to such a horrible life changing ordeal. I can’t thank you all enough for what you all have done over these last two weeks. It makes me so happy to know our sweet boy is going to go on to live a beautiful, healthy, and strong life. They are home now in Boone, so for those who reached out to me asking for a time and place to deliver sweet cards from his classmates, you can connect with Maria now for her address or time and place. ❤️ Godmama Breezy
