James (Jamie) Cayley

James (Jamie) Cayley, 25 (He/They) was an incredible member of their community, so we are hoping to raise some community support for him and his family in the wake of his passing.

Originally from Guatemala, Jamie lived and studied in the UK before coming to the U.S. to pursue a graduate degree at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. He loved Orla Gartland, Cavetown, and his cat, Willow. He cared very deeply for his friends and his community, and was a volunteer with SQSH since May 2023.

Jamie was very involved in our comm

unity at a local, national, and international level. On top of his roles on SQSH’s Helpline and Grants teams, he volunteered with several other organizations, including Trans Lifeline and the Trevor Project. He had a passion for queer youth outreach and mental health support.

Jamie was a soft-spoken and gentle presence within SQSH. He often engaged in our work by representing SQSH at events, sharing resources in our Slack channels, compiling grant opportunities, suggesting events to attend, and so much more. Apart from the work, Jamie was our friend, and the grief in the wake of his loss is immeasurable.

Jamie, you are held with so much love and grief. Thank you for sharing your light and your voice with us. Thank you for sharing your truth and your heart. Thank you for sharing your passion and joy, even when it was difficult to be passionate or joyful. Willow is safe and loved and will want for nothing. We wish that there had been a different outcome. You are deeply loved and missed.

Jamie's parents are flying in from Guatemala, but to assist them with the costs of transportation of themselves and their child's body, and the cost of funeral or any other expenses, we began this GoFundMe. Any help is greatly appreciated as we try to offer support throughout such a devastating tragedy.
