Save Firefighter James's Foot, avoid Amputation!
Donation protected
Hello, I am Sara Dow (James's wife) As many of you know James suffered a severe injury to his left foot/ankle after falling from a ladder. Fracturing his tibia, calcaneus and talus. His talus bone was so horribly displaced that it flipped 180° and rotated 90° almost exiting the back of his foot. Talus fractures account for less than 1% of fractures in the body. It is commonly referred to as aviator fracture from pilots crashing planes. There is little medical support out there since typically when someone suffers such blunt force trauma, they don't live to require treatment. The talus has a very narrow blood supply to it and following his severe injury, its been severed. Now as a result, that talus bone which supports the human body weight is becoming necrotic, dying. Surgery is needed to attempt and relieve the pain and hopefully avoid a below the knee amputation. He had 2 surgeries already at the time of injury and was non weight bearing for 3+ months. It has been a year since then and he is still in constant pain daily and unable to walk more than a few steps without severe pain. It has completely changed his life and ours as a family, significantly. James is also a Firefighter and has been serving the community for 20 years risking his life to respond to others in their times of distress. He has been out on leave for over a year now. He is now facing early retirement at the young age of 41 due to the severity of his injury. We have seen several doctors, but none have been willing to try and help as this is what they refer to as "unchartered waters" but finally after relentless research, and some luck I finally found a surgeon in Denver that has seen this rare injury before and operated with success! James did fly out to see the Specialist and he is confident he can relieve him of his everyday pain and give him back the quality of life he had before this dibilitating injury. Unfortunately, our insurance plan is out of network with this surgeon and we are now left to pay for the surgery he so desperately needs, out of pocket. Please help James get back on his feet (literally!) Surgery has been scheduled for the quickly appraoching date of February 7th!
Your support means the world to us. Thank you!
