Donation protected
PHASE 3:  A little extra for a dog crate, first installment of vet insurance and other necessities--goal $750. Deadline: November 18th.

We have collected the funds necessary to purchase Padre in full!! Thank you to all those whose support has made Janet's dream of a service dog come true.  Padre will be arriving with his trainer, Marty T, on November 18th for three days of training with Janet. The final transfer to Janet's care will take place on the afternoon of November 20th.  Janet is SO EXCITED!

PHASE 3 donations will cover such necessities as a large crate for Padre and a bed, plus help Janet to get started with vet insurance, food, and any other items Marty indicates are necessary.  Thank you again for your wonderful support of Janet. God bless you all.

PHASE 2:  Full and Final Payment needed by November 8, 2021--ACHIEVED on November 3rd

UPDATE:  We've made the down payment of $7,200 and Janet's dog--"Padre"--is in training. Full and final payment will be due when Padre is ready to transfer to Janet's care. We are on our way toward that amount.

Last December, after 42 years with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, my dear friend, Janet Hunt, retired. Despite her congenital intellectual disability, Jan worked so reliably and took so few sick days she qualified for full retirement 13 months early.

That Janet has so successfully climbed her life’s many mountains is due to her remarkable persistence in facing challenges and to the profoundly thoughtful care of her parents, Athene and Dale Hunt, who died in 2006 and ‘07. Athene’s ardent political advocacy, for example, helped drive Utah’s 1969 enactment of the historic House Bill 105 requiring equal education for every child in the state, including the mentally handicapped.

Since the deaths of her parents, Janet has lived alone and, mostly, managed very well. Mid-March of last year brought the Covid pandemic. The Bureau's shutdown of much onsite work vividly forecast the solitude Janet now faces in retirement.

For decades, Jan has imagined a dog as the companion of her later years.  Only last year, however, did she learn she qualifies for a combined emotional support and mobility service dog, trained to accompany her everywhere--on a bus, to the grocery store and church; inside a mall, a motel, or a music venue. Such a dog will provide not just comfort at home but also keep her walking after retirement and help her avoid falls.

On hearing this news, Janet shouted,"YAYHOO!!"

In fall of 2020, we raised the $7200 for a down payment and that December Janet chose a goldendoodle she has named "Padre." Padre is currently in training with Marty T at Loyalty Service Dogs in Mesquite, Nevada.

Janet is extremely excited. She already loves Padre!  And she can't wait to meet Marty, who will deliver him and provide three days of in-home handler’s instruction for Jan and her sister in law Peggy.

Currently, Janet is alone inside her own head simply too much of the time. She loves her condo. She is happy to have retired in December.  But she needs a close sentient companion. She needs the comfort a well-trained support dog can provide. And she needs the deep pride of owning a beautiful dog trained specially for her, and the responsibility of caring for that dog.

If anybody ever deserved anything, Janet deserves this dog.
