Janettie’s Everest Base Camp Challenge
Donation protected
OK, I know I wear my emotions on my sleeve, but also that I will reach out for help when help is needed … and this is the time to ask for your help. When life gives you lemons you make lemonade – right! Luckily, I love lemonade.
It has always been my dream to climb Everest Base Camp to see Mt Everest and those who know me well, know that I love a challenge. I love LIFE! I’m a mother of a 10-year-old and I’m married to my best friend. But before I am a mum and wife, I'm ME and so I am procrastinating no more and have started my journey to fulfilling a lifelong dream .... oh, and I have EDS and POTS.
Although it doesn't define me, it is integral to the way in which I live my life. To those who like detail in a nutshell, I have 2 condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome which for me essentially means that I am hypermobile and that goes for my internal organs too, not only my joints. My joints get inflamed easily and I have a lot of muscle pain. Internally my organs are a maze of mystery. Dizziness, lack of sleep and a heart that runs away with me - and some other stuff - is what I will face Base Camp with.
In October 2019, in aid of my own personal dream and in the process, raising awareness for EDS Support UK, I will trek for 15 days across the Khumbu Valley, taking me to the foot of Mt Everest where I’ll reach Everest’s Base Camp. The route will start with a 30-minute flight to Lukla, the world’s most dangerous airport. From there it will be breath-taking views, burning muscles, climb to an altitude of 5,643m, and a bucket load of endurance. With no guarantee of how my body will react, I will push myself to the limit. My training started in October 2018 and all is going very well. I have the support of my neurologist, cardiologist, rheumatologist and GPs. I want to give hope to the tons of people out there with EDS who gave up because of their disability, who like me was afraid to fight back– but also to people out there who gave up on themselves. I made a decision in October 2018 to take my life back and do what is in my ability, to get better and live my life to the full during the good and bad days. If I can, you can too!
Standing on the other side, asking for donations/sponsorship is new to me. I will need around £3,500 for my challenge. If you feel led to donate or sponsor me in any form, please see my GoFundMe link below or you can contact me on; [email redacted]. I have been doing public speaking at primary schools since February, talking about EDS and raising awareness as there is no cure yet. But most of all, to encourage people/kids and talk about resilience by sharing my big dream – to see Everest – but doing it with an invisible illness. We all have a story to tell, a mountain to climb. I choose to go around and talk about resilience and hope as it changed my life, and not to focus on the negative. It's an adventure I have long thought about and envisioned.
How can you get involved? Donations will go a long way. With my body/joints being very susceptible to inflammation, all my gear and clothing are carefully selected based on weight so that no extra unnecessary strain will be put on my joints. Currently you can follow my progress on Facebook, but I will also post daily updates on my Facebook page whilst I’m in the Himalayas (I have a few surprises up my sleeve).
If anything is unclear or you want further information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Lots of love and many thanks in advance.
