Janice Windborne Memorial Fund

Donation protected
We all knew and loved Janice and her passing has deeply effected us all.  It was Janice’s wish to be cremated and have her ashes spread in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as well as in Ohio.  People have asked about permanent memorials and the suggestions are as varied as the life she lived.

The question is, “How, where and what should this memorial be.”  Janice’s life and travels touched people around the world.  We know she was a passionate advocate for human rights. Through her work in Public Radio, she gave a voice to the voiceless.  As an educator, she inspired countless students.  And, of course, she planted and tended gardens everywhere she lived.

It is the purpose of this fund to create lasting memorials to Janice’s life and times.

How and where to do this is the question.

Knowing Janice as we all did I think it is safe to say that she would want this to be a democratic decision.

I have received several suggestions from her family, friends and students.  They reflect the manner in which people knew her and the rich and varied life she led. Some of these suggestions are low costs while others would require a large sum of money.

Some of the current ideas are:

·     Memorial markers such as bricks in New England, Ohio and California [and other locations?]
·     A scholarship in Janice’s name at Otterbein University [Ohio, where she last taught]
·     Naming a section of WOBN radio station at Otterbein University where she was faculty advisor until she retired last year
·     A bench or marker along the bike path in Athens Ohio [she loved to ride her bike there]
·     Contributions in her name to Public Radio Stations [California and Arkansas]
·     A grant for the Refugee community in Columbus Ohio [she worked with an aid group]
·     Planting a memorial garden in the Columbus Ohio Metropark system [she loved to walk the various gardens in the city].

Please feel free to make additional suggestions.

The “goal” is arbitrary and has been set by the Go Fund Me site [who –full disclosure take 2.9% of the funds raised plus .30 cents per contribution].   This site will remain active for at least a month to allow Janice’s friends from around the world to find it and contribute.

The final decisions as to what to do with the funds will be made by Janice’s family, Irene Kuhn [friend] and me.  I will keep everyone up to date via Facebook and the mailing list.  If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Also, if you already have or plan to honor Janice in some manner please let us know either by email or via the “Janice Windborne – A Life” Facebook page so that we can let everyone know.

As I go through all of Janice’s current mail I am amazed and touch by all of the causes she supported – let us return the sentiment [Janice would I’m sure be disappointed there are no “premium” tote bags involved].

Thanks

Keith
