Jan’s Recovery and Immingham Dog Shelter
Donation protected
On Tuesday 7th January, our mum, Jan Marriott, and our dog, Laika, were the victims of a vicious dog attack in the churchyard of St. Matthias Church, Malvern Link. Jan heroically dived in to attempt to protect Laika and was taken to hospital due to her injuries. Sadly, Laika had to be put to sleep due to the significant injuries that she sustained in the attack.
Jan is now out of the hospital after the surgical washout of her hands and IV antibiotics but is still heavily bandaged. Now will be the long and painful mental recovery for her and the rest of our family.
Nothing will fill the hole in our lives left by Laika - she was the kindest, most affectionate dog we could have ever dreamt of having. We got her as a rescue dog from Barcelona (via Immingham Dog Shelter). It is so horrible to think that she survived the streets of Barcelona to be brought to the UK for a better life, where she could be safe, and this is what has happened to her.
Unfortunately, we didnt have pet insurance for Laika (which we appreciate in hindsight was very foolish of us). The vets bills have been substantial, which as you can imagine is a big cost to bear at such a horrible time.
Alot of you probably know my mum as she has lived in Malvern for much of her life. She has devoted her life to helping others. This has included public service in both Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. She trained as a nurse at Worcester Royal Infirmary nearly 50 years ago, was the staff nurse at the old Castle Street hospital in Worcester, worked as the matron at Evesham hospital, and continues to work with individuals with learning disabilities, mental health issues and physical disabilities in Gloucestershire. She has also served as a Malvern Hills District Councillor.
She is the kindest, most caring woman you could meet and the last person to deserve this to happen to her. There are very few people in her life that haven’t been helped by her in some way. She has always been incredibly driven to help others and to nurture any human or animal life. She showed amazing courage in trying to save Laika from the attacking dog and running with her in her arms back to our house despite their wounds. Her physical scars will heal, but the mental scars after experiencing such a horrific incident will last much longer.
If there is any way you can contribute, even a little, it would be so very much appreciated. We were hoping that your contributions could help towards the veterinarian bills, paying for Jan to have a much needed break away to help her recuperate and to Immingham Dog Shelter who helped bring our precious little Laika into our lives ❤️
Thank you all so much.
Love from Andy, Michelle, Jan, the Marriott family and our little Laika (Rest In Peace)
