Jared’s Kidney Journey
Jared is, 22 years old and is a father, partner, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, he’s a car and motorbike enthusiast and is a known by his friends and family for being a bit of a d**k head and cheeky shit and sadly he is going through the hardest time in his life unexpectedly. last year around September Jared came off his dirt bike while out camping, his loving mother and partner encouraged him to go to his gp for a check up and the doctor suggested full blood work while we were there. From the basic routine set of bloods we found out Jared has kidney failure. being totally in shock we rerun the blood work and from the second results we were rushed to Albury hospital. We were told his kidneys were running at about 25% and filtering 1/4 of what they should be
Jared then got the opportunity of having one of Albury Wodongas best kidney specialist support him and care for him. This was and still is such a blessing
jareds kidney function was sitting at around 25% at the start of this process and with just bloods and urine we were unable to tell what was causing the damage so we were sent to royal Melbourne for a biopsy which shows that he has IgA nephropathy. This is not treatable and there is no medication that can be given. We started discussing the option of a transplant with our specialist and the likely hood of dialysis. We started mentally preparing for this but knew we had hope and since he wasn’t deteriorating and everything was holding steady we went on with everyday life.
The specialist told us that all of these things were down the track, years down the track. That he would be fine on the wait list even if it took 4 years. in roughly 5 months his kidney function had not gotten worse so we were feeling positive.
April Jared started going down hill, vomiting, hot and cold flushes, dizziness and light headed, mood swings, body numbness, fatigued, reduced appetite. We presented at Albury base hospital and our specialist was doing rounds thankfully. We got the gut wrenching news no one ever wants to hear, his kidney function had dropped to 7% and with extremely high blood pressure 191/123 that we are struggling to get under control.
we were not expecting his health to deteriorate so quickly and now we may be looking at urgent trips to Melbourne to start the dialysis process sooner.
we still don’t know what caused the sudden drop in his kidney function but the truthful words from the doctor “you could drop dead any day without treatment”obviously Jared is now unable to work and his mental health is suffering so badly with this, his young and otherwise fit and cannot understand why this is happening to him. He has 3 beautiful children ages 6,3 and 6 weeks and 3 step children he raises as his own ages 8,7 and 5. With 6 kids to support not working and trips to Melbourne is such a financial burden. Especially since this happened so suddenly. His mother works 3 jobs and will have to take time off doing this and running her business to be there beside him, this leaves Jared’s father to care for there other 4 children at home and also miss out on work and income also.
We don’t know what this go fund me is hoping to achieve but we know Jared and us need support, we are struggling to find services to help us on such short noticeand trying to deal with this all happening so suddenly has been a challenge. We know down the track there is things Jared is going to need to make him comfortable in everyday life. We feel so in the dark at the moment.
i will update this every time we get an update from the doctor and let everyone now how he is travelling.
Thankyou Dee (partner), Kylie & Chris (parents) and family. Your support and even kind words means so much to us.
