Jarrod Hahn's Medical Expenses

Hi, my name is Vanessa Hahn, and if you're here, you know and love Jarrod and our family. On Saturday, August 27, 2022, the morning after our 11th anniversary, Jarrod and I went to the ER because he was experiencing stroke symptoms. He walked in on his own power and checked in, but by 8 am, he was having trouble walking. By noon, he was unable to move both arms and legs and was having difficulty speaking. By 5 pm, he could not move, speak, nor breathe easily.

After being misdiagnosed three times, we learned Jarrod had suffered a pontine stroke (a large area of acute ischemia at the pontomedullary junction), which translates to a stroke in the pons of the brainstem caused by a blood clot. This form of stroke caused him to have locked-in syndrome. His cognitive abilities were intact and he could open his eyes, but he was unable to move his body. It was not a true paralysis in that he had sensation in his limbs . . . just no control.

Jarrod spent 3 months at Select Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute care hospital. He has been close to 4 months at NeuroRestorative, a neurological rehabilitation facility specializing in Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs). He has received physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech and language pathology (SLP) therapy. He went from only moving his eyes, eating via G-tube, and breathing with a tracheostomy to talking and eating pureed foods. He is still unable to walk or lift things, but he is ready to come home.

Jarrod still needs a lot of PT, OT, and SLP rehabilitation. He has learned to move around with a motorized wheelchair. This fundraiser is to cover our deductibles, moving costs, and long-term care.
