ROSES (Reaching Out Supporting Every Sister) is proud to be a sponsor for Jasmine Hyder, who is a 2016 Olympic hopeful. Not only is she an amazing athlete, but she is also an amazing person. Her hard work ethic, commitment and desire to become the best is ingrained in her DNA. Join us in our efforts to help her maintain the professional training and coaching needed on her journey to get to the Olympics. This is her story...
She lives by the name Jasmine Hyder, but she runs by the name Jasmine Chaney. She has been competing by that name since she was 11 years old. Sixteen years of her life have been dedicated to track and field. When she was 17 she committed to one of the three scholarships that she was offered. It wasn't a "full ride," like the other two, but it was a promise that she would be able to become the first in her family to graduate college. Plus, she would have a shot at her long term goal of winning 5 Gold Medals at the Olympics.
She says she knows winning 5 gold medals sounds crazy, but she dreams BIG! She took the scholarship from Arizona State University over the others, because that promise and opportunity meant more to her than anything money could buy. She went on to EARN an increase in her scholarship from 35% to 100%, and later graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre.
Her scholarship increase was given after she became a 3-time Team National Champion, 2-time Pac-10 Team Champion, Pac-10 individual Champion (400Meters), 2-time All American in the 4x100 and 4x400, and 2 time individual All American in the 400 meter hurdles. In 2011 she went on to place in the top three in the 400 meter hurdles at USA Championships, and secure her spot on her FIRST USA Championship Team!
Her dreams never felt closer. At the Championships, after a very long collegiate season, she left Daegu, South Korea as a Semi-Finalist. Unfortunately, her needed endorsements were not secured, so she stayed in Phoenix with her college coach and they worked hard to get her to the 2012 Olympics.
In June of 2012, she matched her slowest time of the season in the first round of her event; and her hopes and dreams of making her first Olympic team were crushed. She cried and wanted to quit. But, the same coach that gave her an opportunity to be the first college graduate in her family, offered her another opportunity to move to Lubbock and train under his guidance. Instead of paying him, she helped him with his athletes at Texas Tech, and became a mentor and "assistant" coach to his girls.
She worked as a waitress on her off days, and trained 5 days a week. She worked doubles on Saturdays and Sundays to ensure she was able to pay her bills. But, 2013 turned out to be slightly disappointing on the track. However, it was a blessing in disguise . She ran the best professional season of her life! She had a World Championship year, but her performance was not recognized because she was in the shadows of the 2013 team.
Jasmine was proud of herself, so she kept her head up. She had moved away from her family and friends, to a place she had never been, and excelled as a professional athlete. Along with that accomplishment, she met and married her husband in Lubbock. And, they had their first child in 2014, proving that God truly does work in mysterious ways.
In 2014 she did not compete because she became pregnant, but 6 weeks after having their daughter she started back on her journey to make her first Olympic Team. Since her husband was from Austin, Texas they relocated there. To her benefit there was an excellent training group in Austin. The Coach accepted her to his group of elite athletes. These athletes hold world records, Olympic Gold Medals, and even USA Championship Titles. So, she was training with the best of the best. And, it showed because she accomplished a lot in the 5 months after having her daughter.
Without any Fall training, in the Spring of 2015, she went to compete amongst other internationally world ranked athletes in the 400 meters (which is not her event). She placed 3rd, 4th and 6th place in each one of her competitions, only 6 months after giving birth to her daughter! She also competed at the USA Nationals in the 400 meters, but did not make it out of the first round.
But, her focus and vision is different this year. Her mentality is to win! She says she is not running for a contract - she can't. She's running to complete a goal that she wrote down when she was only 14 years old. And, that goal leads her to where she is now.
Jasmine started Fall training on October 5th 2015. And, her first goal is to make the 2016 World Indoor Team in the 400 Meters, and then go Outdoors and become THE BEST FOUR HUNDRED METER HURDLER IN THE WORLD - at the 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES IN RIO! The training to accomplish this goal is costly for any Track and Field athlete who does not have endorsements. In fact, T & F athletes, sacrifice it all in hopes of fulfilling their dream. Jasmine is no exception, and this is where she needs our help. All donations are welcomed, and every donor will be invited to a post 2016 Olympic Games VIP Celebration with Jasmine and her family! Your support is appreciated. God bless you all.
