Of the many tragedies of the COVID-19 pandemic, the worse are the good people we lost who did the right things to protect not only themselves and their family and friends but everyone else. These tragedies strike the hardest because they count for less than 0.01% of all COVID-related deaths. These tragedies should never have happened in the first place.
Jason Kealoha Ballesteros was not just a tragic statistic. He was a father and husband, a son and brother and most of all, a friend. A good man in every sense of the word who cared for his family and his friends.
Born and raised in Hawaii on January 2nd, 1971, Jason worked for most of his life as a heavy equipment operator, even losing a couple of fingers in a work-related incident he would later use to playfully mess with people who were not aware of the accident. He worked on the massive H-3 project in Hawaii until its completion forced him to move his family to Las Vegas in 1998. It was there that he and his wife, Chantelle Mokuhali’i Ballesteros, and son, Shane, prospered and found new adventures and friends.
Having just celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary in August, Chantelle’s world began to fall apart when not only Jason but their son, Shane, also contracted the deadly virus. Vaccinated, Shane – a spitting image in looks and character of his father – made a recovery. But Jason, a life-long affliction with asthma, never made it out of the hospital, never made it back into his soulmate’s arms ever again.
On October 5th, 2021, with his lungs failing to work on their own and kidneys shutting down, Chantelle made the heart-wrenching decision that her husband, the father of their son and love of her life would let her Jason go, allow him to no longer be in pain.
No one should have to go through this kind of pain, make that kind of decision. And no one should have to endure it with the added weight of medical expenses. We humbly and with a heavy heart ask you, their friends, family and people who care as we do, to help ease this financial burden so that, somehow, someway, Chantelle and Shane can move on and heal their hearts in peace.
