Help Jason Koebernick with medical expenses
Donation protected
As he has for the last five years, Jason was volunteering with Buffalo Grove Rotary making construction improvements at the Ak'Tenamit School in Guatemala. His vital work has helped give kids in an isolated rural area access to drinking water and education for job opportunities they would otherwise not have.
Unfortunately, at a recent trip last May where Jason was helping to construct new dormitories at Ak-Tenamit School, he fell extremely ill and suffered a heart attack, stroke and brain bleed. While doctors in Guatemala were able to save Jason's life, medicine that was used to increase blood flow to his heart cut off circulation elsewhere in his body. As gangrene developed in his legs, his left leg had to be amputated below the knee and the toes on his right foot had to be removed.
After eight months of hospitalization, and still amid regular physical therapy to deal with substantial nerve damage, Jason is optimistic. His speech and wit has fully returned, and he is determined to return to work. But the medical costs are substantial. It cost over $120,000 just to get Jason released from the hospital in Honduras. Jason had to sell his condo and car to cover the expenses of long-term hospitalization, and had to move back in with his parents, as he requires assistance to move about.
There is hope on the horizon for Jason, as he is being fitted for a prosthetic leg that will return his ability to walk. But he needs a helping hand from all of us for the medical debt he incurred while doing good for others.
