Born on January 17, 1973, in Columbus, Ohio, Dr. McGlothlin was a devoted husband, father, friend, counselor, and professor who was truly selfless. He cherished life with his wife and soulmate, Deborah G. (Fisher) McGlothlin, his children Matthew J. McGlothlin, David J. Rimar (Hannah Dezort), Dominique G. Rimar (Cristian Bailey), his mother-in-law Roberta A. Holler, his brother-in-law Joseph D. (Diana) Fisher, nieces and nephews; Vincent, Dominic, Nicole, Anthony, and Angela Fisher, numerous close friends and family members, and canine companion, Finn. He was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him, Ludwig (Frank) and Virginia Hesse, his mother Elizabeth Anne Hesse, his Uncle Thomas Hesse, and his therapy dog Cledis known as “Hippo.” He was a member of the Friendship Bible Church in Randolph, Ohio. Dr. Jason McGlothlin was employed at Kent State University as a tenured associate professor of counselor education and supervision. His empathy towards students was highly regarded within the community and by his closest colleague, Dr. Marty Jencius. Dr. McGlothlin’s research and scholarship centered on suicide assessment, prevention, and treatment, providing consultation to various organizations and schools nationwide. He provided consultation in hostage negotiation to police departments and actively provided support services to the May 4th Visitors Center and veterans of the May 4th event. He also assisted the Red Cross as a First Responder in nationwide traumatic events such as 9/11, Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Chardon. Dr. McGlothlin was warm and compassionate, always willing to lend an ear and help. His calm presence, generosity, and kindness will be greatly missed. He was the current Chair of the American Counseling Association Midwest Region. Beyond Dr. McGlothlin’s professional career, his pride and joy were his family. Together they chased adventures around the country and celebrated life’s little moments like unapologetically dancing in the kitchen. Much of his life was spent raising his son, Matthew, lovingly referred to by his dad as McG. Jason and McG had a profound bond beyond imagination. Their time together was spent snorkeling, enjoying LEGOs and comic books, participating in baseball and football as a coach and player duo, and traveling annually to Surfside Beach, South Carolina where they fished, played putt-putt and drove through town on a golf cart. A celebration of Dr. McGlothlin’s life will be held at Moulton Hall Ballroom on the Kent State campus on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023, beginning with a prayer vigil at 10:30 am and gatherings to follow from 11 to 2 pm. In honor of his wishes, cremation has taken place. Donations are being accepted to contribute to Jason’s lifelong mission to support organizations for suicide prevention and mental health awareness through a GoFundMe account titled “Jason McGlothlin Memorial Fund.” Condolences and memories of Dr. McGlothlin may be shared at www.sscfuneralhomes.com.
