Hi my name is Hana and I’m fundraising for my friend Lydia Murphy.

Last week on Thursday Lydia got that devastating knock at her door from 2 police officers to notify her of the death of her brother Jason.

Jason presented himself voluntarily to the hospital asking for help with suicidal thoughts several times due to suffering with extreme insomnia for the last 3 months. Hours later after being discharged from hospital Jason’s body was found on Cronulla Beach after taking his own life, with his final words being written on his discharge papers saying

"If you find this well I done it and took my life, please call the authorities".

This has a very strong message to a failed system.

Jason should have never been discharged from the hospital and Lydia being his next of kin should have been notified but none of this happened.

Lydia has started a petition to get the law changed so that it is mandatory for the hospital to call the patients next of kin when discharging patients from mental health hospital units. She strongly believes if she knew he was being discharged that her brother would still be with us today. With all this going on she has still found time to try and make a difference and is trying to get laws changed so that maybe she can help another family not go through what she is experiencing at the moment.

Lydia is the kindest person and will alway be there for others but finds it very hard to ask for help as she has alway only had herself and her brother to rely on. Lydia is recovering from spinal surgery she had in December and has been unable to work and with the passing of her brother and not having any family or parents to help her with funeral arrangements and expenses she has been left alone to navigate and work it all out.

Im asking if anyone could please help her out so she can give her brother a funeral and she can grieve him the way he should be.
