Jay’s Story
It is with a sad heart that we write this GoFundMe post. Never would my brother expect to be in the position he now finds himself in. On Saturday, January 28, 2023 our brother Jay Moyer was found collapsed on his living room floor from a double-sided ischemic stroke and heart attack. That prior Thursday, his wife Sherry travelled to Gaithersburg Maryland to visit with their daughters for the weekend. They spoke to Jay on Thursday but were not able to reach him by phone on Friday. Saturday they began to worry as they still could not reach him nor had he returned their calls. With a little panic in their hearts, they knew something was wrong. Sherry got on the road to return home (this is a two-hour drive). Along the way she reached out to a friend who quickly agreed to check on Jay. Upon his arrival, looking through the window, found Jay was collapsed on the living room floor. A 911 call was made and an ambulance arrived on the scene to transport Jay to a regional hospital in Salisbury Maryland and is now in the ICU. Jay is not able to move any of his limbs, head or able to speak.
ICU & Extensive Recovery is in his future
As Jay cannot move nor communicate, the doctors have stated he will have a very long recovery. His carotid artery is completely blocked (100%) on one side and 60% blocked on the other side preventing blood flow and oxygen to get to the brain. This is why his stroke impacted both the right and left-sides. This rare type of event impacts both physical and verbal functioning. In lamen's terms, he is a quadriplegic. Jay will be in the hospital until this acute critical stage of his care is stabilized. Once it is felt he is safe to transfer, Jay will be moved to a skilled-nursing home that specializes in rehab for stroke victims. Jay’s wife Sherry is unable to physically care for him and family members are minimally two hours away. As Jay's recovery time could be greater than a year, Jay and Sherry will need to find a rehab facility that is closer to family so that family members can help out during this time.
Financial Needs
Jay works independently. They do not have a traditional insurance plan (they have Medicare part A & B for Jay with no supplemental insurance (GAP) coverage). He does not have short or long-term care insurance coverage. Many expenses lay ahead for my brother’s family. The financial burden of the skilled nursing facility alone will cost, after day 20, a daily rate of $200 or $66,000 for a year! The family will also lose Jay’s income for this indefinite time which places the family in jeopardy of losing their home. This family is experiencing three tragedies from one event! Sherry’s paycheck covers the auto costs, food and utilities. While Jay does the heavy lifting to work to try to recover his physical mobility and speech, my brother’s family needs so much help financially. We need to raise the funds to support the endless medical bills not covered, the rehab costs that will not be covered as well as some of their daily living expenses.
Any amount you feel you can contribute will be so greatly appreciated - nothing is too little - if you can give $1 a $1 will be graciously and profoundly appreciated. And if you are not in a position to contribute, please share this page with those you know so that it continues to reach as many people as possible. All efforts to support this family is such a blessing and they thank you from the bottom of their hearts!
