Hi family and friends and community!!!
On July 19th, I was hit by a car going 40mph+ on Foothill Blvd in Oakland, California. One minute I was walking across the crosswalk to meet my friend Dee, and the next I was flying through the air— and then thrown on the sidewalk!! There were 20+ witnesses and a crowd of people around as an ambulance took me away to Highland Hospital. The police and EMT casually mentioned that they take “all of the hundreds of pedestrian hut & run victims” there.
My initial injuries were a pretty big deal, I was bedridden and not able to walk for weeks!! Luckily I had close friends and family to give me intense care... without them I would still be roadkill. (I couldn’t shower or do anything alone for all of August! It was rough and I was notttttt doing well). My sister facilitated a GoFundMe in July to cover a
few months of my rent so I could rest and recover with a clearer mind.
After loads of exponential healing, I am walking and mobile. My body looks almost normal again, but my mental health and emotions have been admittedly unstable! Missing out on work has been hard on me. Also— It’s been difficult to keep up with updates to friends and community while also spending my days navigating the bureaucracy of Oakland Police Departments, Kaiser Permenante medical billing processes, and legal inquiries so I can advocate for myself as my bills start rolling in.
I’ve learned quickly that rent, bills, and endless medical fees don’t stop— even for hit and run victims! Given the attitudes of the first responders, I barely expect real justice.
Go Fund Me has tricky rules and I couldn’t reactivate my old account. So I’m starting new!! I so apprappreciate any
donations— and all of the warm wishes! I seriously would be in big trouble without you all. Can’t wait to be back on the move so I can dramatically reenact the crash story with you all.
