Jay's Motorcycle Accident Medical Fund

Dear Friends, Family and Kind-Hearted Individuals,
I am reaching out to you with a plea of support. One of my dearest friends, Raymond (Jay) Brod was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident back on July 9th, 2023. A car made a left-hand turn in front of him while he was driving straight on his bike. After receiving multiple surgeries for his right arm, right leg, and most recently, a leg crippling wound on his right shin, we are humbly asking for your assistance in raising funds to help cover the mounting medical expenses that have amassed and will lie ahead.
Following the accident, Jay was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT where he was treated for skin lacerations, a fractured right wrist (titanium plates, screws) and a concussion. His right knee suffered the most injuries with full thickness tears of the ACL, MCL, PCL, medial and lateral meniscus. A month later he underwent MCL repair surgery. During this time he’s had a few home care (PT, OT, Nurses) visits and I’ve been staying with him to assist with things like cooking, showering, and basic living necessities, as he has great difficulty with mobility. By mid September, with assistance, Jay was able to attend outpatient physical therapy for both his wrist and knee. It’s been a long painful road so far with PT, and as of now he has regained a significant amount of mobility in his wrist.
Just when we believed things were starting to look up, an intense infection developed on his right shin in a wound site that originated from the accident. The infection had intensified to the point where the wound spread and deepened, almost exposing the bone. He was brought into the Emergency Department at Griffin Hospital in Derby, CT where he was admitted to be administered IV antibiotics. Upon discharge, he was required to follow up every 3-4 days at the wound care center and in between appointments a wound care nurse would follow up with home visits to perform dressing changes. The infection only subsided and within a week we were admitted back into Griffin Hospital begging for better antibiotics and re-evaluation since the infection had spread to his MCL repair surgical site. In being diagnosed with osteomyelitis, his knee surgeon advised he be transferred to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT so he can take over care and re-evaluate.
This brings me to the present, where in the last week Jay has undergone surgery to debride the wound, and an additional surgery for a medial gastrocnemius flap to be placed over the wound. This type of flap requires harvesting a part of the calf muscle to put into the wound site and then taking a skin graft from the thigh and placing it over the wound. He was also set up with a wound vac to ensure the surgical site remained sterile and less risk for further infection.
As of 10/24/2023, Jay has been admitted to Mount Sinai, a rehabilitation center for physical therapy in learning how to use his right leg again after all the trauma.
These past few months have been unimaginably difficult for both Jay and I between dealing with a broken medical care system and inexcusable negligence. We are asking for your support, both emotionally and financially, during this difficult time. Any contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a tangible difference in easing the burden of medical expenses for Jay. Your generous donations will go towards covering hospital bills, rehabilitation programs, necessary medical equipment, and potential future procedures.
Moreover, I’m kindly requesting you keep Jay in your thoughts and prayers. The road to recovery will undoubtedly be challenging, and your moral support will provide him with the strength and courage needed to face a long road of physical therapy and treatment ahead.
Additionally, we encourage you to share his story with your friends, colleagues, and social networks to help raise awareness and garner additional support.
We can’t thank you enough for your compassion, generosity, and unwavering support.
