JeffDixon Music Collection Memorial
Don protégé
3000+ CD's, One Collection, Innumerable Memories
Those of us that remember Jeff Dixon well know he was was an avid music fan. He was knowledgeable about all types of music, but his true passion was always hip hop. Over time, his tastes concentrated into a particular genre, specifically underground hip-hop.
Quite different from the Kanye & Drake jams that flood the airwaves these days (no disrespect, much love), his favorite type of music often had limited production value but focused heavily on the connection between the DJ and the MC. Many albums were just simple beats with dense, flowing lyrics. Others were soundscapes created by the DJ with simple imagery added by the MC in the form of rhymes.
In a time before Spotify and Pandora and Jeff went through great lengths to add gems to his music collection. Jeff would scour message boards and homegrown websites (before tumbr and Wordpress) for news on favorite artists. He would buy cases of cd's a week, Tuesday being new release day. Delivery day was special, he'd catalogue each new disc, add it to his collection then listen at least a few times before making any judgement or providing a review of the new album.
Before the incredible rise of social media that helps put artists in touch with their fans, Jeff related in a much more personal way. He would travel nearly any distance to watch is favorite artists play live, often chatting with them after the show. They'd talk about the industry, discuss new artists, relive last concerts and share news of upcoming shows. Live shows were also a primary source for new CD's as he would buy cd's direct from the artists. Often, these were unreleased mixes made by the artist; unique CD's that couldn't be found in record shops and online stores.
Some of my favorite artists and most cherished music memories come from my friendships with Jeff Dixon. RJD2, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Living Legends, even Dre, Snoop and Tupac back in his more "commercial" days. One-day Orlando trips to see Atmosphere, Tally for Eyedea and Abilities, Coachella, Atlanta to see Living Legends...
Over the years, this passion for music created a precisely curated CD collection 3000+ strong. Many of these CD's are not available on any of the popular music services of our day. A lot of them are signed and personalized by the artist. None of them are ripped onto a hard drive.
This collection is frozen in time in 2008. It is a history of passion and a collection of memories that are solidified and manifested in this wonderful collection of music. Unfortunately, the collection is kept in cardboard boxes out of reach to those curious about its contents.
This go fund me will create the proceeds necessary to buy the computer equipment (ripping machine, HDD storage, cheap desktop) that is needed to digitize this music collection. I am offering my time for free to this project. The completion of this project will see two portable hard drives loaded with this entire music collection. One for general use and one for "backup".
