Soap is a simple solution

Update: In February 2020 we visited Uganda. We started a project that has been very successful. For a long time due to COVID shutdown, schools were closed and no soap was made in the chemistry class. Since the COVID lockdown of schools ended, the project was picked up and new supplies are finally needed.

Feb 2020
We have been in a small village in Uganda called Nsawo. While we have been here we noticed not only did the clinic not have hand soap at all the sinks but none of the schools did either. This is a huge problem because diarrhea is one of the leading causes of mortality in small children in Africa and when people don't wash hands with soap it spreads fast. Also it’s essential that doctors and birthing moms are able to wash their hands to take care of themselves and newborns safely.

So, through Rotary connections, we found someone who could teach us how to make soap, taught the clinic staff how to make it, taught the recipe to the chemistry class at the local high school, then together with several of those students, who are Rotoratcors with the local Rotary chapter, went to the younger schools (ages 5-12) to perform an educational skit and show them about the importance of hand hygiene, and to deliver the soap and hand washing stations. Our plan - that the high school science department along with the clinic will be able to make hand soap for the community going forward, however that can only be done if they have money to buy the soap ingredients. We ask that you please donate, all funds will go to the local Rotary Interactive Youth Group, Wobalenzi for this project.

-Thank you,
