On February 6th, 2024, a volunteer and board member from The Artemis Project responded to a plea for help to rescue a stray mother dog (Jeanette) with a broken back, unable to walk, and her 6 puppies from a dilapidated and abandoned building in Altus, Arkansas in Franklin County.
It was alleged by multiple community members that the property owner had demolished the front porch while Jeanette was underneath it, crushing her back and causing her to become paralyzed in her hind legs. She was found in the field next to the home with a pile of dog food next to her.
Upon arrival, our volunteer was notified that a community member had secured Jeanette and one of her puppies, but they needed help retrieving the remaining 5 stray puppies from underneath the abandoned home. Our volunteer entered the property and was able to rescue one of the puppies before the property owner showed up and demanded everyone leave his property, and told our volunteer that he would be demolishing the abandoned building and he would not allow anyone to rescue the remaining 4 puppies.
The Franklin County Police were contacted and shortly after arrival, they arrested our volunteer and another community member for criminal trespassing. Our volunteer and a 73-year-old community member were held at the Franklin County Detention Center without bond for 18 hours. During their hold, they were initially refused a phone call and their prescribed medications. The story was broadcast to Facebook Live, gaining thousands of viewers and supporters who were utterly shocked and appalled at how the animals and our volunteers had been treated.
Throughout the following week, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the property owner refused to show the public proof of the conditions of the puppies that were forced to be left at the property, even after the property owner was shown on video filling in the space under the home that the puppies were hiding, with dirt. The sheriff's office continued to release conflicting reports on the status of the puppies, and our supporters coined the hashtag #ShowUsThePuppies.
Jeanette was initially taken to the vet by the concerned community members and later entered the full care of The Artemis Project where she stayed in a safe foster home with her 2 rescued puppies. She received a full workup at the vet and multiple surgeries. Now, as of 2/18/24, Jeanette is ready to have her FHO surgery to hopefully regain mobility in her hind legs, with an initial cost of $4,437.91. This is a huge cost to our rescue that we are willing to fully take on, but we need your help.
The Artemis Project is a foster-based and volunteer-ran nonprofit rescue that has a mission to rescue as many homeless animals in their area as possible, but the lack of enforced animal welfare laws and resources in rural Arkansas & Oklahoma poses a challenge, as they already have over 400 animals in their care. The Artemis Project spays, neuters, and provides urgent medical care to every animal they adopt out, and they cannot do it alone.
Jeanette is the perfect example of how pets are consistently failed by humans and our community due to ignorance and lack of education on animal welfare. Stray dogs running at large in the area and having puppies on the streets is not a unique occurrence in this area, and we hope Jeanette's story can bring attention to the issue and be a stepping stone for change. We want to promote spaying & neutering for pets, the enforcing of animal cruelty charges, and educate our law enforcement on the importance of these laws.
We are a voice for the voiceless, help us help them.
Help us overcome this medical debt and continue to save lives.
