My husband Jeff a father of four was living a happy healthy life until a day in May 2016 when he woke up in severe abdominal pain like nothing he has ever felt before. After a trip to the er we learned that he had appendicitis and was going to go in for emergency surgery. By the time they got him into surgery the appendix had burst. Jeff recovered in the hospital for a week and we thought it was behind us. Little did we know this was just the beginning. The Drs learned he had a tumor in his appendix and since it burst it spilled out into his abdomin. Next we knew we sitting at the cancer center waiting to meet with a surgical oncologist. We then learned he needed a major surgery to take care of this. But again another complication. Jeff also has had ulcerative colitis for a few years and his colon was severely inflamed. This caused an issue because it wasn't safe to operate until it was controlled. Jeff then began infusions at the hospital to try a new medication to help with the inflammation. A few months of trying the infusions the Drs didn't see any changes in the colitis it actually got worse. It was then decided the oncologist didn't want to wait much longer and needed to schedule him for surgery. Between his oncologist and gi it was in jeffs best interest to perform a total colectomy. During this major surgery hipec was done as well. Hipec is a chemo that goes directly into the abdomine and flushes through for about two hours through a port to wash the organs to kill any tumors that are not seen by eye. Jeffs surgery was done on March 6 and he is still in the hospital recovering. The surgery was a success and overall went well but due to so much being done at once Jeff has an ileostomy temporarily. His stomach needs to fully heal and then he will go for surgery to put things back together. Jeff has now been in the hospital longer then they wanted after surgery he devolved a fever which they found to be from an infection. He will be able to go home soon and we will have a home nurse checking on him several times a week and also teaching how to care for him.
We are so blessed to have this major surgery in the past. There's still a long way to recovery but as everyone that knows Jeff knows he's so strong! He will be out of work for quiet a while due to all of this. Prior to surgery the infusions we not covered by insurance and now with the ileosemy there are many things we are purchasing for when he is home. Between the medical supplies and being out of work things are piling up a bit more then we were expecting as his surgery was scheduled with only days notice. Jeff isn't one who ever asks anyone for anything and is always reaching to everyone and helping all he can but now he really could use it in this time of recovery. Thank you all for the continued prayers and everyone checking in on him. Will continue to update as he recovers. Thank you all so much it means so much to our family!
