Jeffrey Malone Necrotizing Fasciitis Medical Fund

We’ve set up this page with the hope of helping to alleviate some of the heavy financial burden resulting from our father being hospitalized with Necrotizing Fasciitis.

On January 6th, our Dad, Jeff, was seen in the emergency room at Heywood Hospital. He had been feeling sick all weekend with what he believed to be food poisoning and was also having pain in his elbow. The doctors quickly determined that this was something much more serious and admitted our father to the ICU. Shortly after, they diagnosed him with having Necrotizing Fasciitis, a rare and fast spreading flesh eating bacteria that requires immediate surgery to remove the infected tissue. In addition, the bacteria had caused sepsis, an infection of the blood.

Our father was immediately taken to emergency surgery, resulting in the removal of all the skin and infected tissue on his right arm from his wrist to armpit and leaving him on a ventilator. After his first surgery and complications relating to his Diabetes, he was transported by Life Flight to UMass Memorial Hospital. To date, our Dad has undergone three more surgeries, including taking skin grafts from both of his legs, and he will need more surgeries to reconstruct his arm. After all of this, the plan is for him to be admitted to a rehabilitation facility where nurses will continue his daily dressing changes and he will do physical therapy.

Our Dad has been through the ringer and with the high risk of additional infection and complications, he is not fully out of the woods yet. Every day he is having to endure painful dressing changes and cleaning of the wound. With so much to worry about already and the anxiety from the unknown, the last thing we want him to be stressing over is how he is going to pay for his current and future care.

As you can imagine, this has taken a serious toll on our father not only physically, but mentally. He is a very active guy who loves to play guitar, garden and mess around in the garage with his Mustang, so he will be facing many challenges ahead coming to terms with his new normal. Our Dad is an extremely strong guy who has fought to survive this life threatening illness and while we know that the journey to recovery will be long, he will get there.

We are reaching out for support with the mounting medical bills and future expenses as our Dad is still in the hospital. He will be unable to work for an unknown amount of time and is very concerned about providing for his family. When he returns home after rehab, he will have a visiting nurse and other possible expenses. Our family would greatly appreciate any financial help you can provide and we have been humbled by the outpouring of well wishes we have received for his recovery.

Thank you,
His daughters, Stefania and Chelsea,
his wife Kathy, and family.
