What is Huntington's Disease (HD) ?
For those unfamiliar, HD is often described as a simultaneous combination of the symptoms of Parkinson’s, ALS, and Alzheimer’s. HD is fatal with limited viable treatment options and there is no cure… yet.
In 2011, Andrés García—aka “Dr. Dre”—was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease (HD), a rare and devastating genetic condition that progressively deteriorates nerve cells in the brain.
This diagnosis was especially painful for Dre and his younger sister Alicia, who had already lived through the toll of HD as young caregivers to their mother, Linda, who passed away from the disease in 1996. Their father’s passing from lymphoma in 2004 only deepened their bond, preparing them for the challenges ahead.
In a letter to Alicia, after their mother's passing Andres wrote: "Together, we have risen above the worst… Taking more from it, than it will ever take from us…”
This statement stands more true today than ever before.
Despite his diagnosis, Dre met life’s trials with unwavering positivity. Inspired by his family’s health struggles, he pursued a career in medicine, becoming a chiropractor in 2011. With compassion and dedication, he helped countless patients while facing the daily progression of his own illness. Beyond his work, Dre contributed to the HD community by enrolling in five clinical trials, holding onto hope for a breakthrough not just for himself, but for others affected by the disease.
In recent years, as HD progressed, Dre made the difficult decision to step back from his practice and focus on his health. This included leaving his life in San Diego in May 2024 to move to Denver, where he lives with Alicia, her husband Evan, and their daughter Beda. His fiancée Natalie continues to provide him with love and support, maintaining a close bond despite the geographical distance. Dre is also fortunate to have the steadfast support of his sisters Julia and Mariana, who currently live in Florida. As his symptoms advance, Alicia and her family are fully dedicated to ensuring he receives the highest quality care and maintains a life of dignity. However, delays in Medicaid and disability insurance have compounded the financial strain, making it increasingly difficult to manage the costs of his care and daily needs.
Why We Need Your Help:
As Dre’s needs increase, so does the cost of his care. Alicia and her family have taken on reduced work hours to prioritize Dre’s wellbeing and health, resulting in significant financial challenges.
Your generosity can help:
• Fund essential medical and neurological care.
• Provide for daily living expenses and logistical support..
• Ensure Dre maintains quality of life surrounded by love.
