Jenna's Fight with Meningococcal
Donation protected
Jenna was a 2 year old who suddenly contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia in 2015 in Australia, contracting the B strain which was not on the Immunisation Schedule. Like us, most are unaware there is a vaccine on the private market to protect against this disease. After nearly losing her life, she was saved by fabulous medical staff, and was placed in an induced coma, on dialysis and numerous medications in ICU for 3 weeks. But the worst was still yet to come.
After a week, unaware this would then happen, Jennas skin started to blister and died in large patches on her limbs and bottom, leaving open wounds through muscles, tendons and bones in some areas. Her fingers and toes started to shrivel and turn black, then her hand and arm.
The result was Jenna losing her right arm, all the fingers on herleft hand, toes and knee cap. Along with this she endured multiple skin grafts, to replace necrotic areas down to tendons, muscles, ligaments and bone. She ended up spending 5 months in hospital, enduring multiple surgeries to repair her broken body. Following on from this, intensive physical and occupational therapy to learn how to walk again, and utilise her stumps to regain independence.
Although she has gotten off lightly compared to others who also lose their legs, or their life, she is still suffering ongoing problems. The infection has affected the growth of her limbs, which will stunt and deform her legs and arm as she grows, so she will need multiple surgeries and rehabilitation as she grows still. This go fund me was set up by a close friend to help in the year her parents had to stop working to care for her while in hospital and attending therapy. She cannot have traditional prosthetics as her elbow is non functional, so a future intervention may need to be sought which is not covered by the Australian Healthcare system. Some non custom prosthetics are in excess of $80,000, out of reach of most people.
Please help if you can! It is greatly appreciated.
