Jennifer Nicolas’ Support Fund

Last year on Mother’s Day, Jennifer Nicolas was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer with Mets to multiple areas in her body, just a month shy of her 41st Birthday. She was sick since January of last year, but because she was young multiple doctors continued to diagnose her with pneumonia. She finally broke down in her primary care providers office and told him there is something wrong, I have done all the treatments to fight pneumonia and nothing is working. She had trouble breathing, she couldn’t lay down, could hardly catch her breath. Her primary doctor did a CT of her Chest and ended up showing fluid in her left lung and multiple lesions. She was sent to the ER right away. They did a thoracentesis, removed the fluid and biopsies were taken, an Aspira drain to manage the fluid accumulating in her lungs was also placed to help remove the fluid at home. Awaiting her biopsy results we then found out that she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

She was referred to an Oncologist, and was placed on aggressive IV chemotherapy until the doctor could find the target drug for her lungs. The PET scan revealed multiple areas riddled with tumors such as her brain, spine, ribs, scapula, and sternum. She was also referred to a Radiologist to do radiation on her brain.

My mom was compliant with her regimen but with each PET scan after treatment she found that nothing was working and the cancer continued to spread. The treatments caused my mom to have anxiety, she was depressed, in constant pain, she sustain multiple fractures in her spine from the
tumors and she was always sick. This got to a point where only her husband could care for her as everyone else would trigger her anxiety. The pain and suffering she went through was unbearable. The doctor’s wanted to be even more aggressive and wanted to start IV chemo again and start daily radiation. It came to a point where they were even questioning if she was taking her medication, we explained that she was it religiously. Her oncologist has never seen a case like this where her body did not respond to any of their treatment courses. This is where she decided enough, she wanted to live her life and enjoy the surroundings of her loved ones. She made the decision to stop all treatment and begun her Journey through hospice this past April. We saw the change she was back to her old self. Family and friends were able to see her and enjoy her presence. She was able to celebrate her 42nd birthday this past June. Since finding out about her cancer our family has thanked God for allowing her to spend an extra year of life with us.

My family and I have recently found out that my she has become terminal and may only have a few weeks left or less with us. We are asking for help in this time of need to help with past medical expenses and memorial expenses that we are planning.

We continue to thank everyone for the continued love and prayers that you have give to my mom.
